The delays in the receipt of ma
terial for paving has a familiar
sound. It is reminiscent of other
delay! on other paving in other
days gone by.
The appearances are that any
lack of attention in the way of a
celebration of the Fourth in Motv
mouth will be amply made up for
elsewhere. There are few cities in
this section of . the valley who are
not advertising celebrations this
year.
While grain .and grass are waist
high this year the fruit crop ap
pears to be an indifferent one.
There are, practically speaking, no
pears at all while the cherry and
prune crops are neither as heavy as
common.
The vote in the precincts of Polk
county outside of Monmouth on the
reconstruction act shows that the
prospect of adding a hundred
thousand dollars in public building
to property in the county of Polk
did not stir our fellow countyites
with any degree of enthusiasm

Compare Our Fixtures with Others
There's a big difference in the "fixtures" you get at the
prices asked for different silos.
Compare Eitnres when you buy a silo. It is the fix
hires that make a silo. Durability, security and stability
are determined by the anchorage, the size, quality and
number of cables, hoops, lugs and staples. Convenience
and ease of getting at your silage for use are determined
by the door and ladder construction.
In other .words, you pay as "extras" for necessary con
veniences without which your silo is incomplete.
Notwithstanding our lower price, we include more and
better fixtures than many who ask more for their silos.
In some cases we supply more of a given item than
others, as in anchorage cable. In others, our fixtures
are stronger or better in whatever vital point deter
mines their value.
Keep this ad and check our fixtures as described above,
with those offered by other silos. Don't pay more and get
leu, or buyjulf a silo when you can get a complete one.
Although we have had
a fine strawberry spring there
have been verv few strawberries,
this because the two dry summers
past have been Jun favorable to the
strawberry plant and not many of
t'le local beds are in first class
shape.
We believe it was a mistake for
the commissioners in Paris to revise
and resubmit the terms of surren
der demanded of Germany. Even
if the terms are agreed to at the
point of coercion the ' result will
never be the same as if the Ger
mans had been held to the .first
terms "submitted. The fact that
they had some effect in the matter
and have been able to modify in
the least degree the original terms
offered will be magnified in the
f.itherland and bolster them up
with the idea that the peace is one
of negotiation.
Organized labor appears to have
given Mooney the go-by. After
staging protest after protest and
scheming ,for a nation wide strike
in his behalf, there is now a ten
dency to let Mooney fight his own
battles. There is, said Secretary
Wilson, no retson to think that
either, in the prosecutor or the
trial judge was there anything but
fair treatment giving Mooney.
The statement that Mooney has
always had anarchistic leanings and
has persistently advocated violence
in the industrial conflicts that have
come to his attention is bound to
tell against him, in any cold and im
partial consideration of the accusa
tions against him. We predict
that the new stand of labor in
favor of John Barleycorn will be
as equally short lived and think the
the stand is 'equally ill advised.
Labor never had a worse enemy
than John Barleycorn. The testi
mony of the Seattle delegates that
prohibition had increased their
bank deposits anS gone a long way
to abolish misery among them is too
plain in the evidence tq be denlel.
It is said.that easy writing makes
hard reading. The man who with
little inspiration can sit down and
dash off ream ' after ream of copy
usually finds it difficult to find any
one willing to work hard enough to
read what he has written. The
nicely polished phrase, the senti
ment tritely expressed, that sticks
in the memory is usually something
thought out with the accompani
ment of strenuous mental effort,
The poetry that reads the easiest is
invariably the hardest to write,
Likewise with a painting. The
picture before w hirh you pause in
the reverent quiet of the art gal
lery, marveling at the skill that has
faithfully reproduce! a scene or a
specimen of 'still Jife, is produced
only after years of tedious exper
ience and long hours of labor. Such
reflections as this must come to
the mind after witnessing the splen
did class play of this year's Normal
commencement. The scenery was
so harmonious, blending with the
positions of the actresses, the act
ing stages of the morality followed
one another so subtly that it seem
ed a thing of life and natural growth.
The orchestra selections fitted
in so nicely that they appeared to
have been composed for the pur
pose. It was something which one
followed so easily that it was dif
ficult to realize that a distinct
moral theme had been indicated at
the same time. All of this indica
ted there was thought and study
necessary, from the composition of
the book down to its harmonious
representation. It was in the mind
of the meditator a distinctly credi
table performanpe.
