The labratory at the Army and
Medical School has shipped since
April 1 suflicient typhoid and para
typhoid vaccines to inocuate every
man in the army.
Throughout the process of mak
ing the vaccine is guarded against
any contamination. It is then
stored in sealed vessels in locked
refrigerators, to which only the
two officers in charge have keys,
and none of these vessels is ever
moved, except in company of one of
the officers. In more than six
months of large-scale production
not a trace of contamination has
been found.
One of the tests of the vaccine
includes the inoculation of a mouse,
a guinea pig, and a rabbit. If too
much tricresol (a coal-tar product
used a preservative and to kill the
bacilli) had been added, the mouse
would be killed. Should tetanus
germs be present both the mouse
and the guinea pig would be killed.
With the emulusion correct, as it
must be to be used, no animal is
killed, and the guinea piu and rab
bit are not visibly affected by the
inoculation.
