II. S. Portwood is preparing
for activity as a rancher.
E. W. Strong is at present the
landlord of the Hotel Monmouth.
Dr. Grider and family of Inde
pendence were visitors at Dr.
Matthis' Sunday.
F. M. Fisher was at Vancouver
the first of the week.
Joe Clark who for five years
has been first lieutenant of the
Herald printing office is now reg
ularly enrolled as a marine in
the navy and is getting accus
tomed to his new duties at Mare
Island, in San Francisco Bay. He
left Monmouth for Portland Sat
urday having first undergone a
preliminary examination and
passed it successfully. On Mon
day morning he was examined
in Portland and passed and in
the evening was started for the
south. The marine corps which
he has joined is a portion of the
soldiers of the sea in the service
of Uncle Sam and promise the
new recruit a considerable oppor
tunity to see the world as well as
do his mite in behalf of the flag
in time of danger. Joe promises
to keep us informed as to his
movements and we look forward
with interest to notes of marine
soldiering.

Little Alliece Hembree the six
year old daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Clark Hembree fell and
broke her left arm Tuesday
morning. She wa9 learning to
ride a Shetland pony which had
just been presented to her. Her
mother was leading the pony
when the little girl slipped off on
the farther side breaking the
bone just above the elbow. It
was a complete fracture as was
shown by an X-ray picture taken
at Dallas. The bone was prompt
ly set. The little girl is now at
Allen Clark's where the case is
; being looked after by Dr. Mat-
this.
A stolen auto was the sensa
tion of Northwest Monmouth
last Sunday evening. C. H. Par
ker was called from church with
' the announcement that his auto
! was missing. Marshal Moreland
was routed out and the search
was on. It turned out that the
auto had only been borrowed for
as the search party stood at the
carafe the car came up. The

driver saw the search party,
! stopped a few yards away, turn
ed off the lights and hastily de
camped.
Rev. W. A. Elkins has received
notice of his promotion in the
Chapln Corps from the rank of
1st Lieutenant to the rank of
Captain, dating March 28th.
This is an appointment that in
regular routine comes in seven
years time although in time of
war may be made sooner.
Lester Wattenburg, son of the
late S. P. Wattenburg, and who
has been an invalid during his
few years, died at the family
home near Fossil Monday. He
was born with a defective heart
and blood from veins and arter
ies mixed and flowed in both
channels.
It is reported that Dad Graham
and Mrs. C. C. Mulkey will in
dulge in a potato raising contest
on the lot between the garage
and bakery the winner to get a
dozen lemons, purchased by the
loser.
Mr. and Mrs. A. II. Craven
and daughter were Salem visit
ors Saturday. They were accom
panied home by Mr. and Mrs. J.
Stuart Albert of Salem, who
spent the remainder of the week
end in Monmouth.
