Collins, of Shedd, was a Monmouth visitor Tuesday, being accompanied by his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Lancey, from Bellingham, with whom he had been visiting his son who lives at Indepen dence. Mr. Collins, who is now 93 years old, is a former resident of Monmouth, having moved away from here in the year 1875. He was well pleased with the improvement that had been made since he moved away. E. H. Lorence andC. D. Tyler, accompanied by their better halves, made an auto trip into the Airlie Country Sunday, but they are not very highly im pressed with the condition of the roads in that locality. Mr. Tyler says that he was out there a few days before and that they stuck in the same mudhole again and Jhat the only difference was that on this occasion they pulled out by their own power while on the other occasion it took a team to accomplish the job. One of our enterprising young townsmen who .has conquered the intricacies of the automobile, has started in to master the bicycle. A few evenings ago while indulging himself in this exhilerating pursuit, being headed down the street in front of the postoffice, the bike got away from his control and headed for the curb against which it colided with a sudden ness that made him think for a moment that he had exchanged for a flying machine instead and he didn't light very downy-like either. Cal says that persever ence will conquer yet. Main street was graded from the east side of town to the west side of the city limits, and Monmouth avenue north to the dormitory, while the citizens on the south end of the street sub scribed money to have that part of the street graded. Mayor Johnson, H. C. Ostien and others subscribed enough money to have the street fronting their property graded the length of the block. Joseph Craven and C. G. Griffa had the street graded fronting their property on Jack son street. Of course all the work was not done Saturday, but it has been going en since. Report from Independence says that the work reached out in all directions throughout the district, and that there were about 300 persons who turned out to work there. In Monmouth the turn out was about 100 persons. All the male members of the Normal school, both faculty and students, were in line and the ladies of the normal prepared a nice lunch for them. The city has been benefitted, but how much can only be meas ured by the influence that has gone out and the results that will follow the examples that have been set. Improvements made are always more or less an incentive to oth ers to make improvements also, and let us hope that Monmouth will long profit by the beginning thus inaugurated. .
