034 bushels of corn and 17,000,
000 bushels of wheat.
Oregon shipped green fruit
during the past season amount
ing to 3,500 cars.
Orchards in the Ontario dis
trict produced at the rate of 1,
000 boxes of apples to the acre.
The Columbia River output of
salmon for the season was 290,
000 cases, valued at $3,500,000.

Getting Down to Working Order
Members of the Oregon Legis
lature got together at Portlsni
last week but. it seems did not
not accomplish much but after
getting to the Capitol things be
gan to take definite shape.
Bowerman's opposition was
strong enough to retire that
gentleman and land Ben Selling
in the coveted seat as the follow
ing item of news shows:
State Capitol, Salem. Or., Jan.
9 Ben Selling was acting Gov
ernor of the state of Oregon for
24 hours. When he was elected
President of the Senate today he
succeeded Jay Bowerman to that
position. By reason of Frank
W. Benson being Secretary of
State and Governor, pending the
inauguration of Oswald West
tomorrow, and Benson being in
California, it makes the President
of the senate the acting Governor.
Bowerman was President of the
Senate and acting Governor un
til the organization today, when
Selling was selected to fill the
position. This retired Bower
man as President and at the
same time deprived him of the
honor of being Acting Governor.
By Selling's election he becomes
Acting Governor until the inau
guration of West Tomorrow.
This is an unusual though brief
distinction, and one which could
not have occurred if Benson were
within the state lines of Oregon.
It makes Selling absolute Ex
ecutive of Oregon, with the
power to pardon and make ap
pointments,' but there is no like
lihood of Acting Governor Selling
exercising his prerogative during
his admistration. Neither will
he deliver an inaugural address.
At noon tomorrom Acting Gov
ernor Selling hands over thf reins
of Government to West, but for
the next two years he will always
be in a position to become Acting
Executive, should the Governor
and Secretary of State tempora
rily leave the state.
