Tuesday looking after business.
B. F. Jones of Independence
has gone to Roseburg to take
charge as register of the Land
office there. He will assume his
duties next Monday.
Prof. A. M. Sanders of Albany
died the latter part of last week.
Prof. Sanders stood high as an
educator and was one of those
who was well known over the
state. Part of his career as an
educator was spent in Polk Coun
ty. His death is not only a loss
to his home city but to the state
as well.
Death of Mrs. V. L Cattron
Mrs. Verne Lytle Cattron, wife
of Eugene S. Cattron, of Wasco,
Oregon, died at the family home
Saturday evening, January 15.
The remains were brought to
Monmouth and laid to rest Tues
day. She is survived by her
husband and two daughters,
Helen and Janet Two sisters,
Miss Laura Lytle, of Portland,
and Mrs. Smither, wife of Cap
tain Smither atFortMjer, Va.,
are also left to mourn her death.

A. C. Miller has been on the
sick list this week.
Tuge Bevens is in Kings Val
ley visiting relatives.
Elmer Williamson gave Cor
vallis and Albany a visit, Friday.
Rev. Willings preached at the
Ward School-house Sunday morn
ing. Lyman and Addie Maxfield
went to Corvallis, Thursday, to
visit over Sunday.
Rev. Willings went to Lewis
ville Sunday to help Rev. Wood
hold revival services.
Hutch Bevens killed a coyote
Saturday. It was being chased
by Frank Miller's hounds.
Abe West and family passed
through the Valley last Sunday
on their return from a visit to
Mrs. West's people at Airlie.
Jake Chambers, who was sum
moned to Portland on the U. S,
trial jury, has returned home,
but will have to return to Port
land again on the 29, inst.
Mrs. Addie Price is in the Val
ley being called to the bedside of
her sister, Mrs. Minnie Townsend
who has been very sick but is
sligntly improved at the present
writing.
Died In Kings Valley, at the
home of his son Willard, Mr,
Larkin Price at the advanced age
of 86 years, ' 10 months and
days. Uncle "Lark," as every
one called him, has been a famil
iar figure here for many years.
and will be generally missed in
this locality. He was a member
of the I. 0. 0. F. of high stand
ing and the order had charge of
the funeral. He leaves twq sons
and four daughters to mourn his
death.

Examination of Census Takers
In reply to an inquiry, Super
visor R. J. Hendricks announces
that tests of candidates for the
position of census enumerator
will be held on Saturday, Feb
ruary 5.
These tests will be taken by the
Supervisor at the Salem post-
office, in the rooms on the second
floor. They will be taken at
Oregon City, Dallas, Albany and
the various postoffices through
out the First congressional dis
trict, under the direction of the
various postmasters, acting for
the supervisor. The candidates
will take the tests at the post
offices that are the most conven
ient for them.
Candidates will be furnished
with the full list of postoffices at
which tests will be taken, and
cards of admission will be mailed
cards admitting them to take
the tests. Every candidate will
also receive by mail a sample of
the population and of the agri
cultural schedules, together with
a circular concering the tests.
Every candidate who files his or
her application, in writing, with
the supervisor by the last day of
this month, will be entitled to
take the test. There will pro
bably be 1700 candidates in this
district. There are 303 places to
fill. Observer. .

team defeated the Newberg team
on the Newberg floor Friday
night by a score of 64 to 6. So
far, the Dallas boys have not lost
