The fire Saturday is a fertile
subject for discussion and the
numerous views had of the sit
nation would drive a Philadel
phia lawyer insane if he attempt
ed to unravel them, or ret a
connected story out of it all.
One man saw it one way and no
doubt some more than one way,
while no two seem to have seen
it alike. Some condemn the
chemical engine and others
praise it. So you can have your
choice of opinions. The writer
saw most of it and is of the opin
ion that had it not been for the
chemical that nothing would
have been saved worth mention
ing from the upper story. Some
argue that it burned so slowly
that everything should have
been saved without any engine,
which is the strongest argument
in favor of it, for it kept the fire
down to a medium speed, check
ing it very much. Mistakes
were made at the start that were
fatal to saving the 1 house, but
once the company got to work
in earnest they worked as well
as veterans. Too many people
lose their heads at a lire and so
do more harm than good. Their
intentions are good, but there
is a place remote from Mon
mouth that is said to be paved
with good intentions, hence
they do not count here. The
lire boys should be let severely
alone when they ure doing all
in their power to get good re
sults, for a very trilling inter
ference will cause the loss of
valuable time and time is the
essence of salvation in case of j onvct having just been received
fire. The writer does not claim ( bv V. O. Hoots. This does not
to have any greater perceptive j ,,., tlMt thero is a rebate on
powers than other people, butji,mu.aiu.e ow in effect, but all
he does claim that he uses his
powers of observation most of
the time and in the case of the
they were in a normal condition.
Others condemn the chemical
engine as no good, but we say
emphatically that but few
who condemn it know anything
about it. Further, there are
plenty of people so constituted
that they would condemn Christ
now with as great, if not greater,
alacrity than did the Jews
ly 1W0 years ago. They
ileinu the chemical and those
who bought it, vet they would
vote early and often against any
proposition to bond the city for
the purpose of putting in a first
class water system that would
give us a good lire lighting
source. If there is anything on
earth more than another that
would cause the use of profane
language it is to stand and lis
ten to some of these persons dis
cuss learnedly the why and
wherefore of this tire and of
other fires. Life is too short
and time too valuable to waste
in trying to teach such people
the philosophy of things tempo
ral or otherwise. It is said every
one has a right to his opinion,
which we hope is true, but at
the same time he has no right
to condemn his neighbor un
heard,' which in this case hap
pens to be the chemical engine
Going Up
The following terse language
was used recentlv bv Senator
Taylor, of Tennessee, while talk
ing on tariff revision. While in
the main it is all too true, vft
we have grave doubts if the
democrats under the same con
ditions would do anv better.
Only wl'en independent, non
partisan representatives of the

"They are again about to de
liver the masses over to the clash
es, and sharp-faced and lvnx-
eyed avarice will still continue
to throw mock kisses at the pout
ing lips of plundered confidence,
and the carriage of Dives will
still continue to throw con
temptuous dust from its glitter
ing wheels on the squalid rags
of Lazarus. The sovereign
people will soon wake from their
irridescent dream of revision
downward to find the same old
vulture of protection rising far
above the Dingley minimun and
soaring to the blue cerulean of
the Aldrich maximum, with the
American consumer bv the seat
of the pantaloons in his talons.
Protection has run men mad
with lust for gold and hunger
for power. There is the iingle
of gold in the very laughter of
modern financiers, the eyes of
politicians are jaundiced with it,
and I sometimes think that if
the great Republic could be
lifted up and spread out in the
kingdom of heaven the repub
lican party would dig up the
golden streets of the New Jeru
salem in three hours, and levy
a tariff on the harps of the
angels for the protection of
American industry."
Insurance rates have been
lowered in Monmouth from 25
to V. l-.S per cent, notice to that
hereafter taken will be at the
new rates. This action bv the
Underwriters was largely
i n II u-
bv the fact that
we have
a chemical engine, for the ex
aminer who recommended the
lower rates spoke very highly of
the progressive spirit of the
council in buying it. This low-
ering of rates ought to prove to

The Observer came out Tues
day in a new dress, the product
of tho new linotype just installed.
Hrother Hayter deserves a great
deal of credit for his progressive
spirit. The Herald extends
heartiest congratulations and
best wishes that the venture may
be a profitable one.
