There seems to be a feeling
among a large number of people
throughout the state that it costs
too much to graduate teachers
from the Normal schools. As
to the other Normals we have no
knowledge, but as to our own
school we say that this is a mis
taken idea. Here the teachers
secure the advantage of the best
training that can be had. Thev'
get the benefit of the knowledge
gained by years of experience in
the schools of other states, which
is disseminated bv those who
teach here. They have the
training department which is
the only one of its kind in the
state, in which the advanced
theories of the school are put in
to actual practice. The work
done by the graduates of this
school speaks for itself. True
not all who graduate here make
successful teachers, for the same
reason that all the grail nates of
a business college do not make
successful business men. Teach
ers are born, not made and the
greatest instructors in the world
cannot make a teacher, nor im
prove very much on nature.
However the great difference be
tween a well trained teacher ami
one who has merely graduated
from the eighth grade of the com
mon schools, is too apparent to
need comment. A normal school
is an absolute necessity in all
well regulated states and this
state has gone back half a cen
tury through the action of the
last legislature. We believe that
the Hoard made a great mistake
when it aked for an appropria
tion of $10i;,((IU for each of the
schools when no such sum was
needed, at least not by the Mon
mouth school. We have ample
accomodations for 4H students
without a dormitory and - when
the number reaches that point,
or near it, there will be plenty
more found for double that num
ber if necessary. Take the ac
tual cost of graduating teachers
here and compare it with the
number of farmers turned out
at the Agricultural college and
it will be seen that the farmers
cost the state 100 times as much
as the teachers and yet we hare
no fault to lind with that school
and it received a very large in
crease in its maintenance fund.
Let us be reasonable in our de
mands and there is little doubt
but we will be able to get the
necessary appropriation through
the next legislature and a sum
sullicieiit for maintenance that
will be perpetual.

reckon with and it may be that
another democrat will be mayor.
At least it is to be hoped so un
der the present conditions.
Harry Lane was elected as a re
buke to the grafters and it may
be that another democrat will be
elected as a rebuke to the ma
chine, the reactionaries and the
devil, as represented by his able
lieutenant, the Oregonian. It
may look to some that this paper
is taking altogether too much in
terest in Portland politics but
not so, for the political condi
tions obtaining in that city have
a much greater bearing on the
state than most persons suppote.
Go there and live for a few years
and you will gain an insight in
to many things that are entirely
unknown to you now. From
there comes the sinews of war
for the fight against the people
on every move that is made in
the interest of good government.
The money to fight the temper
ance movement, which means
greater prosperity to the common
people, which the liquor dealers
of that city are trying to stop
before it takes hold of the city
and destroys their business. The
monev to debauch the legisla
tu res so that laws in the interest
of the people may be repealed
and burdensome ones enacted in
their stead and we might con
tinue this strain indefinitely and
not exhaust the subject.
When you pinch a dog's tail it
howls, likewise when you tread
on a man's corns. The editor of
this paper has been accused of
writing a column editorial. Well
he has the ability to do so with
out having to "tank up" at any
illicit booze joint. This isn't per
sonal, but if there is anyone in
the county that feels that it fits
his particular case, he is welcome
to its use and no royalty will be
charged.
The rain that began Sunday has
been the making of many thou
sands of dollars for the farmers
of this section of the Willamette
valley, as the ground was becom
ing exceedingly dry and grave
fears were had as to whether the
hop crop was not seriously in
danger. However this is all over
and everything is growing nice-
ly.
