Japanese in America.
There has been no better state
ment of the case of Japanese in
the United States than that made
recently by Senator Newlands of
Nevada, hence it is herein brief
ly summarized. Nature has class
ified the peoples of the world
mainly under three colors, white,
black and brown. East of us are
300,000,000 white Europeans, re
garding whom we have.establish
ed strict immigration laws,
though they assimilate with us
and become Americans. The
blacks we necessarily have with
us constitute a great problem,
and possibly a great peril of the
future. Confronting our Pacific
coast are nearly 1,000,000,000
brown Asiatics who, unless re
stricted, would quickly settle up
on and practically take possess
ion of our entire coast region, at
least. History teaches that it is
impossible to make a homogene
ous people by the juxtaposition
on the same soil of races of
different colors. Only amalga
mation, if that, and that is un
desirable, will do this. Race an
tipathy and hostility, under such
circumstances, are inevitable.
The antagonism would be political
social, industrial and moral. The
Japanese in large numbers are
more undesirable than the
Chinese, who, unlike the Japs,
are patient unambitious and sub
missive. We admire the Japan
ese for their strong and pro
gressive qualities, but the two
races cannot remain friendly in
competition on the same soil.
Laws restricting or preventing
immigration are preferable to in
ternational treaties. A treaty
prevents subjects from going ab
road, which we would not do; a
law prevents certain people from
coming in. At such action Japan
cannot justly take offence; she
can do the same if she pleases.
Such a law is no implication of
the inferiority of the excluded
race; it may rather be a confess
ion of our inferiority in certain
respects, our inability to cope
with them economically. Local
and sporadic anti-Japanese leg
islation is impolitic and unwise,
but a broad national policy as
herein indicated, should be an
nounced and adhered to. Japan,
or any other nation of black or
brown men, cannot reasonably
object to it We do not hate or
quarrel with our neighbors be
cause we do not allow their
children to come into our house

to large deposits of sand it ought
to be an easy matter to cultivate
all kinds of flowers. Put another
means of making a few dollars
on the side would be the pro
duction of vegetables. The
groceries here and at Dallas and
Independence could be supplied
with fresh vegetables during the
winter season that now have to
be imported from California. It
would seem that they could be
produced here much cheaper
than they can be brought here
and sold. This in itself ought
to make a goodly sum of money
for one who understands the
business. The matter is worthy
of consideration and we hope
that some one who knows how
will investigate the situation.
We believe that a stock yard
should be established here.
There are many reasons why
this should be done, but chief
among them is that the money
that is being paid for stock in
this county is largely being spent
elsewhere and it should come
here. Hundreds of dollars that
are drawn from the Polk County
Hank every month are paid out
to merchants of other towns for
no other reason than that the
stock is shipped from there and
if the shipping were done from
here we would reap the benefit
of this money. The extra charge
of $3.50 per ear from here can
be overcome in some way and
we believe that if the matter is
brought before the Hoard of
Railway Commissioners that it
will be adjusted. Let us get to
work and see if we cannot get
results on this stock yard propo
sition at an earlv date.

It has been suggested that the
Herald take up the subject of a

seems that when llowers are
wanted that the nearest place
they can bo had is at MeMinn
ville and they are very expens
ive. Just what amount locally
one could sell remains to be
seen, but it is an old and true
paying that there is none so poor
as he who has nothing to sell.
