Riggs, of Dallas, has returned from a trip to southern Oregon and is visiting her son, T. A. Riggs. Mrs. Claud Skinner's little girl came up from Independence, Monday to visit with her Grand mother Mrs. L. M. Hall. Hon. C. L. Hawley was up from McCoy the fore part of the week visiting with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Hawley. Dell Butler installed two new Meridian electric lamps of 120 candle power Tuesday in the hardware store of Winegar & Co. He came to Oregon twenty years ago from Illinois, first settling in Yamhill county. Mr. and Mrs J. M. Staley and family, of Fort Morgan, Colorado, are visiting relatives here. Mrs. Staley is a daughter of M. H. Graham. Mr. Maginni who has rented the Stine property in the north of town has purchased one hund red acres of the Stewart donation land claim. Although our boys were de feated in the foot-ball game, they show by their work that they are capable and we expect to win every game in the future. . Mrs. Hyde and Mrs. Pete Schreuders were elected by the Christian Sunday School as dele gates to attend the Union Sun day School Convention to be held in Independence November 17 and 18. The plate glass front was put in last week and has been painted. It makes that part of the city look quite me tropolitan. Hon. M. D. Foster was re elected congressman from the 23rd district in Illinois by a large majority. He is a democrat and his district is largely republican. This speaks well for his popular ity. He is a son of B. Foster of this place. Dr. Crowley was a business visitor in Portland last week and reports having seen W. E. Brid well while there. Mr. Bridwell is now permanently located in the city and is engaged in the hardware business. In order to keep posted on current events in this part of the state he has sub scribed for the Herald. Miss Edna Guthrie was in In- dtpendonce, Monday. Mr. and Mrs. D. M. Calbreath were in town Monday. Wm. Gillson,- of Fair View, was in town Tuesday. Mr. Grooms has just bought the farm of Mr. Collins north of town. Students are all very studitious this week as tests come the last of the week. J. H. Moran was looking after real estate matters in Indepen dence Tuesday. Lewis Fisk, of Alma, Michigan, is visiting his sister, Mrs. R. II. Treat, of this place. The Normal students are tak ing hold of the debate nicely and we expect to have a good team. The Christian church will be gin a series of meetings Sunday November 22. Everybody is in vited to attend. Archie N. Hosner returned to Corvallis Tuesday after a visit here with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. E. H. Hosner. There will be Union services in the Normal chapel Tharks giving day in which all churches are invited to participate. Mr. and Mrs. Van Winkle, of Salem, returned home Monday after a visit with Dr. Parrish, Mrs. Van Winkle's father. Mr. and Mrs. T. J. Pettit re turned from Corvallis Monday where they went to visit their son who is attending school there. Frank Westfall, a prominent farmer of near Whiteson, came up Tuesday for a visit with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Westfall and with his brother A. B. Westfall. Robert Chaney, who recently purchased the Wheelock place, has remodeled the house and has fitted it up with the lated pattern furniture making a model home. Mr Chaney came from near Pen dleton. C. E. Force and family have been feasting on wild goose for the past week, having received a fine fat one from a daughter, Mrs. P. L. Mulkey, of Rock creek, Gilliam county. The wild geese are ripe up there at this season of the year and are said to be mighty fine eating. Harvey Miller, of Corvallis, was visiting here last week. He is a brother of Mrs. A. N. Hal leck. He reports everything flourishing in that part of the state. Rev. Wigmore was a visitor in Monmouth the latter part of last week; renewing old time acquain tances and shaking hands with former members of his church at this place. Seth Riggs, one of the business men and farmers of Polk county bought a lot at 422 Market street a few months ago, where he has erected a handsome residence into which his sister, Miss Emma Riggs, and himself have recently removed from their Polk county home near Rickreall. Charles Taylor, the well known timber cruiser, passed through Falls City on his way to Port land. Bert Glazier, from Cascade Locks, is visiting in Falls City at the home of his sister, Mrs. Trask. Mrs. Maude Favorite, a trained nurse, is assisting Mrs. Small in caring for their patients at the hospital.
