At one time there was a bill intrrxlueed which had all the ear marks of an early passage, but it was stolen while being conveyed from one section of the legislature to another. Of course this was the work of the gamblers, but we may reason ably hope that if another bill is introduced it will not meet the same fate. Gambling is the bane of this nation and has caused more suffering than any other one thing, notwithstanding it has been repeatly asserted by our prohibition friends that whiskey has done the most. The gambling fever is equally as bad as morphine or cocaine and if practiced for the same length of time, just as hard to break away from. We have seen men come from their work on Saturday night and without pay ing for the weeks groceries or any other bills, stake their whole weeks wages on a single card and losing, go home to their families dead broke. Perhaps thev went home sober, but more often sympathising friends would stake them to a good drunk be fore they left the gambling den camming in some torm is practiced in every village, town and city in this nation and in many places in the country, You will find it in the saloons, in the cigar stores, confectionery stores and even in the church there are drawings and other games of chance, which are nothing more or less than a - species of gambling." The proper thing for our legislature to do is to make gambling in this state a felony and then let us enforce the law. It is said that the people are the government, but it seems they do not realize the impor tance of self government as they should. Laws are enacted by our legislature and if they do not suit the people they are dis regarded. This is bad for not only the adult population, but the coming generation. It teaches the boys and girls that rthe law is impotent and there fore not a thing to be regarded with reverence. If the laws are not right then they should be repealed and something better put in their stead. In this state by virtue of the Initiative and Referendum we can put the matter of our laws directly be fore the people, so if our legis lature does nothing to stop gam bling, we can take the matter directly to the people and we feel absolutely certain that it will be an easy matter to have gambling made a felony. Before another issue of the Herald greets its readers the Presidental election will be a thing of the past. This has Wen very quiet campaign and for that reason alone it is one of the hardest to forecast the result. Reading the daily papers one finds that both candidates have been elected a goodly number of times, yet when the returns are in, but one will be chosen The Oregonian has been work ing along machine lines and as usual has cartooned the opposing candidate, which seems to be one of the necessities of modern political campaigns. As a news paper the Oregonian is one of the best, but as a political organ it is one of the greatest of shy sters in ixistence. It howls loml and long of its republicanism yet it is a wellknowu fact that it has been a prime factor in the movement that has given the best offices in the state into the hands of the democrats. The democrats could well afford to subsidize it to work against the party in this state. Just because you are better dressed than some one else is no reason why that person is not as good as you. Clothes don't make the man, but man makes the clothes. Your schoolmate may not have his shoes polished as nicely as yours, nor his trousers creased, nor his hair parted as accurately as yours, yet he may have inure substance under the hair than you have Before poking fun at him think of these things. The time may come when vou will want a favor from him and he mav not feel like granting it. Strange things occur in these davs and the ones that are poor today may be rich tomorrow, those that are behind now mav be in the fore front then. 1 Improve the present op portunities for when they ' are gone they will never return Most men have to live to be forty years old before they find out what big fools they were when they were boys and then it is sometimes too late to reform. The Monmouth Herald, pub lished at the seat of the State Normal by W. T. Fogle, is a very creditable little five-column paper. It is valuable to its read ers for its local news, normal school notes, Polk county cor' respondence and departments, Its short editorials are well writ ten. Mr. Fogle, a number of years ago, was editor of this paper. Crook County Journal. Monmouth should have a Board of Trade or some kind of organization to aid in building it up. Most of the towns of the valley are building up rapidly and there is no reason why we shouldn't do as well. Shark Fear Noiee.
