FRIDAY, DECEMBER 17, 1915, LIVING HIGH IN THE AIR. Quito, In Ecuador, With Winter Above and Summer Below It Quito, In Ecuador, lifted nearly two miles Into thin air. has always boasted Its "perpetual spriug," but In sooth It would be just as fair to call its climate ''perpetual autumn." With a tempera ture that borers about 60 degrees F. in tie shade, the Qu'iloiiian passes bis life in early April or lntr October. He escapes the winter, to be sure, , but misses the vernal miracle that re deems the higher latitude. But, wheth er he feels chilled or baked, be can al ways turn bis eye toward comfort. Out across the plain, about three miles to the north, the road drops 3.000 feet through a stupendous ravine, and from the high places of Quito one can peer down into a semitropical valley. Its coffee trees and cane fields dancing In the beat waves. On the other band, when the over bead sun scorches there are a score of snow peaks to refresh the eye. As you study through a fleldglass tbe huge drifts and wild snowstorms on Antl eana, which looks out over the rank forests of the "Orlente," you realize that it is easier and safer to get from where you are to Greenland than to reach those polar solitudes only a dozen miles away. Groves of eucalyptus in tbe environs Of Quito agreeably relieve the majesty of the scenery, and it is said that this province bas a third of a million of these trees. President Moreno intro duced them from Australia half a cen tury ago, and it was a saying among even the enemies of Moreno that on the day of Judgment he will escape the penalty of bis misdeeds with the plea. I gave Ecuador the eucalyptus." New York Telegram. PUZZLED THE JAPANESE The Tumult a Whit Woman's Pair of Blaok Gloves Cauaad. Japanese women never wear gloves. Thousands upon thousands of Nippon natives bave never seen a pair of gloves. One day as nn American girl and I TODe walking through u xniull village some distance from Tokyo we were at a loss to understand why such a large crowd gathered around us on tbe street. In a small town an American always gathers a crowd, but this crowd was particularly thick and excited, and when the Japanese do any looking they want to do it up close. The natives kept looking at my partner, pointing and Jabbering away, wildly excited. The crowd kept getting tighter and tighter, while with our bands on our noses we kept trying to push out. They kept pointing at ber hands, then at her face, and not UDtll oue of them reached over and felt of her hands did we un derstand what was the matter. Tbe girl with me had on a pair of black gloves with tbe ends under ber eleeves. so that the excited villagers were trying to solve the mystery of how a person could have black hands and a white face. When she drew off ber gloves revealing bands the same olor as her face, they disappointedly widened enough to let us through. No doubt if she had not removed her gloves tbe legend or tbe woman with the black bands and tbe white face that once visited tbe town would have been banded down for yean. In tbe earlier period of the Roman republic divorces were quite unknown and were rare right up to tbe time of tbe Sullan wars. In tbe old days the husband and wife who wished to sepa rate appeared for the last time before the common hearth, a priest and priest ess being present. As on tbe day of marriage, a cake of wbeaten flour was presented to the husband and wife, but Instead of sharing it between tbem they rejected it. Then. Instead of pray ers, they pronounced formulas of a strange, severe, spiteful character, by which the wife renounced tbe worship and gods of tbe husband. Prom that moment the religious bond was broken, and, tbe community of worship having censed to exist, tbe marriage without further ado was forever dissolved. Puzxlad. Fashioned of sheer batiste, this handmade garmeut has tucking, dashes of embroidery, ribbon and val Insertion as trimming. The woman of nimble fingers can use this excellent cut for a more durable material, like finest quality of longcloth, dimity or a good quality of crepe de chine either white or flesh color. Indeed, experts say that this latter material, carefully laundered, outlasts cotton. Not Settled Yet. "Is tbe head -of the bouse at borne?" asked tbe agent as the mister of the family answered the doorbell. Making no effort to answer the question, the mister person said, "1 don't know what line of goods you are Introducing or whether they would fit in our estab lishment or not, that phase of tbe mat ter being neither here nor there, but let me tell you something if you can establish once for all Just who is to be recognized as tbe bead of this bouse I'll buy a gross of whatever you've got and pay the catalogue price."
