PEOPLE PAT THE BILL
The people of Oregon have an aw
ful bill to pay for the political fakes
that have been worked off on them the
past ten years.
New laws, new commissions, new
systems, new officials have been work
ed off on them galore, and the only
result is the higher taxes.
The people are faked when men are
selected to go to the Legislature on
all kinds of promises of reform which
are never intended to be kept.
State officials fake them when they
go before the Legislature and lobby
through new grafts to increase their
functions and expenditures.
After they are put over the official
lays back on his dignity and takes in
the usufruct, saying it is the law and
the Legislature did it.
No greater fake was ever put over
on the people than the proposed forc
ing of all public work and public em
ployees on an eight-hour basis.
That was worked up right in the
State House and the average member
of the Legislature never knew when
lie voted for it, and yet it costs.
All state employees and city and
county employees, and all contracts
for public work, including road work,
are to be on an eight-hour basis.
Taxes will go higher and higher
until the system of official graft hunt
ing is killed. Pacific Const Manufac
turer. AN EVENT WORTH CONSIDERING
The different commercial clubs of
Polk County should commence and
make arrangements to see that the
large body of Oregon iufliKncial citi
zens who will visit Polk County in
May to attend the Grange meeting
at Monmouth, be shown the pros
perous farming district, and the lum
ber industries that we have. This
will be the largest body of farmers
that has ever visited Polk County and
the delegates are men and women
that are well worthy of the interest
taken in them. It will be a great
advertisement for the entire county
and there should be automobiles pro
vided to see that all are given I
chance to spread the truthful news
that Polk County is the Blue Ribbon
district of Oregon. Read the front
page of this paper, and see the large
number of members of the State
Orange that will send delegates to
this convention and at a glance it
will be seen that an opportunity will
be presented that should not be over
looked. Let us all get busy and help
our neighbor city to royaly entertain
this worthy body of representative
citizens.
Here's to the county teacher, they
challenge admiration, bnt no one en
vies them, if he is at all familiar
with their work.
The school teacher is at once the
most loved and worst abused public
servant. She must please all the pa
trons of the school, she must show
exact impartiality, guide the preco
cious, stimulate the dullard, quell the
rebellious and refrain from looking
cross-eyed at the big boys. She must
not be afraid of mice, snakes, lizards
or busy-bodies. She must be able to
lead the singing in church, teach
Sunday school class of grown men and
women, speak a piece at the meeting
of the literary society, act charades
at the socials and bake cakes for the
box sappers.
She must sweep the school-house,
build the fires, and walk a mile to
school and baek every day. Incident
ally she must have a little knowledge
of everything from cube root to the
new currency law and be able to teach
it.
Don't count your chickens before
they are hatched is an old saying and
was in use long before the incubator
was known. There are a number of
politicians who are already counting
on future nominations, that had better
remember a political ring is a poor
incubator.
J LETTERS FROM THE PEOPLE
Dallas, Oregon, March 11, 1014.
To the editor:-
In your issue of March 10th,
in an article referring to the possi
bility of my becoming a candidate
for the republican nomination for
the office of Represetnative from Polk
County, in speaking of what I told
your representative as what my be
liefs were, it appears that either he
misunderstood what I told him, or
else by accident a part of what I
said was omitted. Though as yet 1
am not a candidate and do not know
I will be one, still I do not care,
as a private individual, to be credited
with certain beliefs which I do not
possess. Among other things stated
in the article in question, in speaking
of what I said to him, your represen
tative has written the following, re
ferring to what I would like to work
for in the Legislature; "a requiring
of payment of taxes in full by April
1st of each year." This is erroneous.
On the contrary, I told him that I
would work for a repeal of the pres
ent law which makes this require
ment. Personally, I feel that it would
be far more satisfactory to all per
sons to pay taxes semi-annually as in
the past; or quarterly; and I further
believe that if it is the desire that
they should all be paid at one time,
that the Fall is the time to pay them.
when everyone has money, and not in
the Spring. The present law is good
for the money lender and banks, but
for the man who must pay the taxes,
it is not good. He borrows the mon
ey to pay the taxes and pays 8 on
it; the money is then deposited back
in the banks to be held there until
needed from time to time by the
County; then the same tax-payer
must go to the bank and borrow the
same money to use in his business
in the Spring, again paying 8 on
it. This does not appear right to
me. Whether I decide to run for
office or not, I thank you for the kind
ly notice given me, and this letter is
in no manner meant to be fault-find
ing, for I know that often-times ac
cidents do happen, even in the news
paper business; but as stated be
fore, whether as a candidate or pri
vate individual, I do not want to
be credited with a principle which
I heartily disapprove of.
