There may be portions of the city that arc quiet, and there may lie some who will declare that times are not any too rushing, but .there are no impactions of lack of work around the. plant of the Dallas Lumber and lagging company and the shops of the Salem, Falls City & Western rail way. Here everything is lively and the large force of men employed in both institutions find plenty to do during every work hour. Dry Kiln Completed. The big modern dry kiln which a Tacoma company is building at the lumber mill plant is about ready for use. or will be by the end of the week, following which it will be test ed and turned over to the company, if found satisfactory. This Is one of the very latest models in dry kiln construction and adds a material val ue to the capacity of the big pint. The company reports plenty of or ders on hand and every department or the mill Is kept in continuous op eration during the day time. Good time is being made on the big order for the Pullman Car company and ..:.. rt nthpr orders, is mis, in Huuiuiiu v.v... giving the force plenty to do. Itailrnad is Active. A force of bridge carpenters in the employ of the S., F. C. & W. com pany is engaged in rebuilding the bridges between Falls City and Black Rock. These structures, of which then- are several, have been in use for eight years and in order to renew their effectiveness they are all being practically rebuilt. The motor car. which has been off the run for some two months, went into service again Sunday and is working nicely. During its stay in the local shops the car has been thoroughly overhauled. Many worn parts have been replaced and the machinery made as good as new. It i now doing duty in place of the coaches and the steam engine which have been used heretofore. The force at the car shops are busv with repair work for their own road and for the Southern Pacific. Saturday a locomotive from the Mur 5dan & Willamina railroad was sent here for minor repairs which were completed Sunday and the engine pent back to be rady for business Monday morning. With more than 300 members of the order present from Dallas, Salem, Wells, Whiteson, Airlie, and Rickre- all, including supreme officers from Portland and Salem, the second model meeting of the United Artisans ever held in the United States, took place last night in this city and is declared to have been a pronounced success in every way. Fifteen candidates, including a number from Dallas, and from other assemblies, were initiated by the Dallas team. Following the ceremonies there were speeches by prominent Artisans and an elaborate banquet at the Woodman hall round ed out an evening of pleasure ami profit to all concerned. Come in Autos. T.arire assemblies were present from other assemblies. They began arriving early in the evening, anu came in autos and auto trucks, the latter being filled with joyous mem bers of the order seeking a good time. Each incoming delegation her alded its arrival with blaring trum pets and shouts of welcome greeted them. The delegations met atWood hnil and marched in a body to the National Guard Armory where the exercises of the evening took place. The interior of the nig auuuonu... was tastefully decorated for the oc casion and presented a very hand some appearance. The initiatory work was performed by the team from the Dallas assembly under the direction of Mrs. Ella AVatt. supreme instructor and Mrs. Ella Metzger. lo cal instructor, and was said to have been one of the finest exemplifications of the beautiful work of the order ever seen on the Coast. For weeks the team has been working hard to perfect itself under the direction of the above ladies and their success was a credit to their individual effort and to the ability of their instruct ors. Armsby company began on Saturday morning, when a number of work men under the direction of the con tractors, Mclntlre & Thompson, be gan excavating for the concrete foun dation piers of the buildlnff which will be located on property belong ing to the Southern Pacific company north of the Soehren Warehouse and facing on Clay street. The outlines of the foundation show that the building will be a large one and will he two and one-half, practically three, stories In height.
