Stockholders Decide to Continue De
velopment of Oil Well On McBee
Place Near Dallas.
A meeting of the Polk County Oil,
Gas, Coal & Land Company was held
recently in the omce of I1 red J. Wag
ner for the purpose of making ar
rangements to continue the develop
ment work on the oil well on the
McBee place. Thirty-five stockhold
ere were present, and after hearing
the report, they decided to assess
themselves to the amount of 25 per
cent of their stock. Laeh one was
also authorized to act oh a committee
of one to sell stock, and a systematic
canvass of the town will shortly be
made. The members of the company
think that they will be able to raise
enough money here at home to carry
on the work.

John Sweeney were lodge visitors in
Salem Tuesday night.
By the premature explosion of a
charge of dynamite that he had plac
ed under a stump on the right of way
E. H. Steinmetz, superintendent of
the construction crew on the new
track to the rock quarries west of
the city, was severely injured Satur
dav but is now imnrovincr. Stein
tt imeta had nlaeed the chars under the
stump and ignited the fuse attached
when suddenly the full charge ex
ploded before he had time to reach
safety. Fortunately, however, he es
caped receiving the full force of the
charge but, a.s it was, he was badly
injured about the face and upper
portions or his body. He was
hurriedly brought to this city and
medical aid summoned.

ness trip to Eugene, Wednesday, in
the interest of the company.
Rev. C. P. Gates, while chopping
wood the other day. chopped a piece
out of his leg inflicting a painful
though not serious injury which con
fined him to his house for a few days.

The County Board of Equalization
will hold its annual meeting in the
court house next Monday for the pur
pose of examining and correcting all
assessment rolls, errors in valuation,
etc. Every person who has a desire
to have their taxes either raised or
lowered will then be given a chance
to bring the matter to the attention
of the boarl. All petitions or appli
cations for tfie reduction of a partic
ular assessment are required to be
made in writing.
