RE MISSING
IT
Having a curiosity to know bow
many of the Observer readers could
crve the hrra names or Dallas busi
ness houses merely by reading a list
of the peculiar lines and brands of
goods carried by each firm, the Ob
server last week inaugurated what it
was pleased to term a knowledge con
test. Uut or the large number or an
: swers received, it is surprising to
learn the extent of the lack of famil
iarity with these firms among the
buying public. Although only nine
teen business houses were advertised
in this contest, and the lines of goods
carried by each were carefully nam
ed, not a single contestant sent m an
absolutely correct list of firm names.
It is noticeable that nearly every
contestant named the liberal users
of printer's ink. By persistent
and intelligent advertising, these
firms have made not only their names
but the lines of goods they carry
household words m every newspaper-
reading family in Polk County.
Firms, however, which have failed to
advertise, or have used printer's ink
but sparingly, evidently will have to
give more attention to newspaper
publicity if they would have the pub-
, Jie become laminar with their names
and the lines of merchandise they are
offering for sale No merchant ever
did, or ever will, achieve noteworthy
success in building up his business
without the aid of newspaper adver
tising,
How often one hears the whine

longer such opportunities lor a

And yet, a Monmouth man clears
$700 from a single acre of straw
berries in one season. Another Polk
County man holds the record of hav
ing marketed $1300 worth of cherries
from seven-eighths of an acre clear
ing an even $1000 on the crop. The
young man of today has opportuni
ties that his father never dreamed of,
And when you hear any person com
plaining t'hat the price of Willamette
Valley land is high, just remind him
. that there is only one Willamette

net Us owner from $700 to $1000 an
acre in a single year is worth the
price it is now being sold for1 and
a much more.
The Newborg Graphic thinks it
sees in the unloading of heavy rails
near Oswego a hopeful indication
that the Southern Pacific Company
is preparing to electrify the Yam
hill division. The company is silent
as to its plans, but the rumor is per
sistent that such a change is contem
plated Although the Hill interests
are already operating between Port
land and Forest Grove, and have
purchased depot grounds in McMinn
ville, residents of Yamhill, Polk and
Benton County towns may yet make
their first trolley trip to Portland on
Southern Pacific cars It seems cer
tain that one or the other of these
companies will be operating electric
lines in the upper west side of the
Willamette Vulloy within the next
year or two and there is plenty ot
room lor both.
Jonathan Bourne's announcement
that he 'will neither canvass the state
nor make any speeches in his cam
paign for re-election to the Unititl
States Senate, is the joke of the year.
If Jonathan ever made a public po
litical K)wech in this state, the writer
does not recall it. If he ever shook
hands with a farmer voter, praised
housewife's biscuits, or kissed an Or
egon bnby, history docs not record
it. lie may enjoy a jx'ponal acquaint
ance with one out of a hundred vot
ers of his state, but we doubt it. In
view of these conditions, Jonathan's
announcement that ha will not visit
us next year, will be received with
ti-Bniiiility. To tell the truth, we
hadn't been expecting him.
.No. 1. Where do you get your

uted throughout the county. W ho

No. 5. From the fulling of the
giant fir in the mountains of West
ern Oregon, through its metamor
phosis in the mills and under the
skilled hands of the artist and me
chanic; till its finish in the form of
an American home, the story ot the
builders is one of inexhaustible inter
est Through all its phases the mak
ing of a home is a great and a tine
art. Men who know what is best in
construction, in selecting of mate
rials, and in assisting of others to
plan for themselves, men who can
save the people money, men who can
iclp the small home-builder, are
HMiefaetora of the community iu
which they . live. Polk County is fa-
ored by having such men working
within its borders, helping create,
distribute and increase the wealth of
all. For instance, this company of j
men who sm'ciuli.e in assisting the
lome-biiildcr, have harnessed t he
water jxiwer of the county, have
miles of logging road, employ eight
or more donkey engines, besides bav-
ng a big payroll in other enterprises.
This, the Company,
will help vou plan your home, will
give you all the advice and assistance
you need. The company then will do
your mill work, see that everything is
made as planned, and best ot all win
do this work for you at prices that
cannot help but give you satisfaction.
One of their chief aims is to suit the
pocket book of the small home-
builder. The chief element of pat
riotism today is the patronizing of
home industries. Because this com

No. 10. "To illumine the streets
or not to illumine" that is the ques
tion. Only, there's no question but
what they will be illumined. First
impressions often convince the pros
peclive investor more than persuasive
arguments The traveler gains his
impressions from the city's streets,
and remembers best the glittering
vistas of brilliant Broadway No
progressive city can afford to be
without adequate, artistic illumina
tion. The idea has swept the coun
try. Cities everywhere are asking
themselves the ' question: "Why
don't we have a Great White
Way?" and merchants are banding
together to install special display
street lighting, purely to promote
better business. Anything that tends
to increase the trallic on a business
street, and brings the people out on
the sidewalks m the evenings, means
better business for the merchants,
with a resultant inlluence on prop
erly values. W e choose the bright
and cheerful street, and where we
walk we spend our money. Civic
pride is the surest step toward bet
fer municipal government. Anything
which adds to the general attract
iveness of the city excites interest in
its affairs, and fosters public spirit
and civic pride. Every citizen
hould be able to "Point With
Pride" to his own city; but how
shall he do this when he sees such a
deficiency as poor public lighting?
Public lighting is a thing of so con
spicuous and evident a nature that
there is no escaping the odium of an
unfavorable comparison -Light up,
and keep lighted up. This company
is willing to assist in every way pos-
ible. W e appreciate the patronoge
of the public and shall continue do
ing all we can to deserve your good
will. An electric fan is .a mighty
comfortable thing to have around
these hot days. And surprisingly
cheap to own and run, too. Ask us
about them. Now, you know us,
surely; hut don't forget about our

tion. Oregon Power Company.
