Burton J. Hendricks article on
"Tlie Origin of the Initiative, Refer
endum and Recall in Oregon," pub
lished in a recent number of Mc
C'lure's Magazine, is receiving some
sturdy whacks from the press bf Or
-Kon for the amount of untruth and
misrepresentation It contains. Even
Mr. U'Ren, who is lauded to the skies
in the article, takes pains to deny the
correctness of many of the assertions
made by the writer After a careful
reading of the entire story the Ob
server Is able to find but one correct
statement; that is to say, but one
statement that would seem absolutely
beyond dispute or contradiction This
is a quotation purporting to have
been taken from a pamphlet issued
by Senator Jonathan Bourne in 1906,
when Jonathan was running for the
office he now holds.
"Those who were iln the Bourne
headquarters almott every day," reads
this quotation, "say that Mr. Bourne
rented all the available rooms in the
' Eklrldge block, In Salem, hired two
cojiks and a waiter, fitted up a kitch
en and dining room and entertained
his friends as he would if they were
quests at his own home Every visitor
who came was royally entertained."
We think the "royalty" of the en-
tertalnment in the Eldridge block has
never been questioned by any person
at all familiar with what was going
on there during the famous hold-up
session of the Oregon Legislature. It
seems to be the general belief in Ore
gon that here was one session of tlte
lyeifislature where good, old farmer
members were really and truly pro
vided with "all the comforts of a
home."
The meeting of the Commercial
Club In the court house Wednesday
night was well attended. There should
have been more present. Every mer
chant and every professional man In
Pallas should have been there. This
club Is working for the good of Dal
las. It is working to increase your
business, and your prosperity. It Is
seeking to build up Dallas in all right
ways; to make it a larger . town, a
better business town, and a mow de
sirable town In which to live In this
laudable work, every man should
have a part; every citizen should
help. It is not fair, nor Is It right,
to ask or expect a few public-spirited
citizens to carry the. whole burden;
to do work which will benefit you and
which you should do fofcyourself. It Is
gratifying to note the interest already
shown in the Commercial Club and the
enthusiastic attendance upon its meet
ings But the attendance should be
greater. Every business man should
lend his presence, his counsel, and his
influence. The club wants you,
Meetings are held every other Wed
nesday night. Decide right now to
attend the next meeting, and you will
never regret it. Your attendance
will help Dallas; it will help the club,
and It will help you.
ANNOUNCE HATCHERY PLANS
Young ly to Bo Nursed -at Central
Stations Hereafter.
PENDLETON, Or., July 4. A new
system for the fish hatcheries of the
state was announced this morning by
Chairman C. K. Cranston, of the Ore
gon Fish and Game Commission, be
fore he left for Portlarnd to join State
.Game Warden Flnley, Master Fish
Warden Clanton and Superintendent
of Hatcheries Wisner on a tour to in
spect present hatcheries and arrange
for the Installation of others.
According-ro Mr. Cranston, it Is the
purpose of the commission to liberate
annually millions of trout and salmon
fry In the streams of the state, where
thousands are liberated now. The
commission also purposes to make It
possible for thousands" of these young
fish to come to maturity where very
few do under the present system.
One or more central hatcheries will
be established where the fish eggs
will be collected In, gfreat quantities,
These stations will be located at
points where It Is possible to get the
largest number of adult fish for
hatchery purposes. Very probably
one for, trout will be built on Spring
Creek, In Klamath county.
The eggs will be "eyed" at the sta
tions where they are taken, and then
will be shipped to the branch hatch
erles throughout the state for further
development Each of these will be
equipped with expensive nursery
ponds.. Instead of liberating the fish
when not more than an Inch In
length, allowing them to fall easy
prey to larger fish or victims of vary
Ing degrees of temperature In the wa
ter, they will be kept and nursed un
til they are three or four inches long,
and well able to take care of them
selves.
Fifty million trout fry annually for
the streams of Oregon Is the mark
which the commission hopes to attain
by next year, and it is possible that
this number will be Increased as the
years go by. By this system it Is
hoped to make Oregon the best trout
fishing state in the Union.
