TRADE AT HOME.
The perplexing task of convincing
people to realize the benefits of trad
ing with their home merchants, says
Hudson's Magazine, Is about the most
herculean task that the small towns
of the country have to contend with.
Money is just as well Invested In the
small town as In the big one, as far
as getting full value Is concerned, and
we must not fail to remember that
when we leave It here it Is only taken
out of one of our pockets and put
Into another pocket, while, when we
spend it In a metropolis, we never see
It again
There It goes to put more gasoline
In the millionaire's automobile and
to buy him more luxurious cars, to
build up his city, to make it clean, to
further beautifying Its parks and re
creation grounds and to enrich and
make more prosperous its already
prosperous citizens and merchant
while we small town people sit and
wonder why we are not able to cope
with cities In mercantile proJectB.
It stands to reason that In order to
sell reliable goods reasonably, the ex
pense account must be curtailed as
much as possible. This Is done In the
small towns. Rents and general ex
penses are less, and the result Is that
the buyer reaps the benefit If he Is
shrewd enough to avail himself of It.
People are gradually becoming educ
ated to the science of skillful buying
and expect more for their money now
than they ever have before. In this
they are justified to a certain extent,
but we should' not forget the proverb,
"The laborer Is worthy of his hire."
"Live and let live" Is the motto for
the merchants to adopt If they wish
to thrive and succeed. Remember
we live largely on each other's cus
tom, and when we spend money with
John Smith we expect with reason
that John Smith should spend his
money with us whenever possible.
Here is the essence of home trade.
We would all feel offended at said
Smith If he took cur money and re
fused to spend his with us. But we
are all Smiths If we buy out of the
home market.
SEEK GAME REFUGE LANDS
State Officers to Inspect 'Resonrves In
Accordance With New Law.
SALEM, June 13. For the pur
pose of looking over with Qovernor
West the state lands surrounding
public institutions, with a view of es
tablishing a state game reserve of
3000 acres, State Game Warden W. J.
Finley and Chief Deputy T. J. Craig
arrived in Salem today.
The new law provides two means
for establishing game bird refuges.
The governor may issue orders affect
ing lands under jurisdiction of the
state, or the state game warden may
enter into contracts with private land
owners to have their farms, or hold
ings controlled by the game law for a
term of "years. The state has 1U0O
acres In one tract here in the asylum
farm and this added to other state
tracts surrounding the penitentiary,
asylum, trplnlng school, etc., will
make a big reserve. Private lands
may also be Included In the reserve.
These bird and game refuges will
be protected by penalty against hunt
ing of a fine of from J50 to 12000.
Where private lands are included the
contract will In no ws' Interfere with
tilling of the soil.

POLK MAN SEES CARNIVAL
Breeze Olbnon Returns to Rent Before
Leaving For California.
Breeze Gibson returned this morn
ing from the Portland rose carnival,
happy and glad to get back to Salem.
Breeze says he saw several strangers
on the streets down there, and not
feeling extra well acquainted with
some of them, concluded to bring his
six bits back and spend it at home.
Breeze Is going to rest up about
two weeks and then start on a trip to
Los Angeles. He will make the
iourney by water, and while his
friends have tried to dissuade him
from this, Breeze says he does not
fear water In the least as a means
of locomotion.
He Is some three inches taller, too,
than when he left a few days ago,
due, no doubt, to the stretching inci
dent to looking over the heads of the
strangers at the carnival. Statesman.

In line with the argument that
