TorVinn no man in public life in Oregon ever enjoyed the confidence of the entire people in a greater degree than did Frank W. Benson, and it is certain that none merited it more. Knrimiilmislv honest, thoroughly con scientious, and always faithful to hiB -,,, whether serving as county ciem, or secretary of state, or governor of a nnd growing commonweaun this quiet, unassuming man won and ,y the resDect and esteem of ali. That the people of Oregon appreciated him at his true value was shown In the last election, when he was retained in his office by the largest majority ever riven to any candidate In this state. Notwithstanding the fact that he was in California during the campaign, aim ho further fact that he aa noi im pend a cent in securing his election af ter the September primary, he carried ,.,. rmmtv In the state. . v,o diction of George E rtHl I n,w nhamherlain to the United States Sen ate, Secretary Benson, by virtue of his office, became Governor ot ureB" While it was a position he In no way .lo.irert. and although Buttering irom lit health at the time, he cheerfully assumed the Increased responsibility and gave the state a careful and crea itni.lo no-ministration of Its anairs. I. helleved by those who knew him most intimately that his conscientious endeavor to perform well the exacting duties of these two important offices was responsible for his complete ,rpBkdnwn In health. His long and oourageous fight against the malady that caused his death was such as to rommand the most steadfast admlra tion and the deepest sympathy of his thmiannds of friends. HiBtorv will not write Frank W. Benson as a doer of great deeds, but it ui record him as one who was raiin ful to every trust reposed In him by the people of his county and state. A SIDE GLANCE AT FINANCE pilory of What Mrs. Brown Acom 1I1nIkh1 With a GreonlMu k. Here is an article that clearly lllu trates In a practical way, the value of money when spent at home: Mr. Brown keeps a boarding house Around his table sat his wife, Mrs. Brown; the village milliner, Mrs. inrom.' Mr ninck. the baker; Mr. Jordan, a carpenter, and Mr. Hadley, n,.r fi And lumber merchant. Mr. r.n'.n tiw.ir ten dollars out of hi pocket and handed It to Mrs. Brow with the remark that there was It toward the 120 he promised her. Mrs. Brown handed the bill to Mrs.Andirews, the milliner, saying: "That pays for my new bonnet." Mrs. Andrews In turn r,n.ai) it to Mr. Jordan, remarking that It would pay for the carpente TunrU he had done for her. Mr. Jor dan handed It to Mr. Hadley, request Ing his receipted bill for flour, feed and lumber. Mr. llndley gave the bill back to Mr. Brown, saying. "That pays 81 on my board.1 Mr. Brown again passe. it to Mrs. Brown, remarking that v,,.H nnu- r.nld her the 120 he had promised her. She In turn paid Mr. Black, to settle her bread and pastry account. Mr. Black handed it to M Hadley. asking credit for the amoun of his Hour bill. Mr. Hadley again re turned It to Mr. Brown with the re mork flint It settled for a month bonrd. whereupon Mr. Brown put back In his pocket, observing that he had not supposed a greenback would go so far. But suppose Mrs. Brown had sent to a mall order house for her new bon net, then the 110 would have gone out of town and never come back. The moral: fi nd your money home. Grant, president of the National Mohair Growers' Asso ciation, County Commissioner Riddell and five of his stalwart sons; J. B. Stump, of Monmouth; Guthrie Broth ers, of Dallas; Mrs. J. W. Farley, of Oak Knoll Farm;" and Thomas Brunk, of "Spring Grove Farm.'; Papers are published from the pens of Commissioner Riddell ana Mr. Grant. The title page is ornamented with a fine reproduction of the grand cham pion buck at the show of last January. He was the property of William Rid dell & Sons, and was pronounced the finest specimen ever handled by the Judge. The hair on the animal was i Inches in length, and was valued at approximately $100.
