The way to build up Dallas is to pat

The editor of the Northampton,
Masaachusetta, Gazette, approves the
action of Congress in making Peary a
rear-admiral. He says it requires a
brave man to go out on the polar ice,
and a smart man to get back.
The Speaker of the late Oregon
House of Representatives sent a tele

a sort of rough riuer regimem '
event of war. Should the enemy load
their guns with fiat-salary printer's
bills, would our gallant Speaker dodge
again?

THINKS GAME ONE-SIDED.
We agree with President Ripley, of
the great Atchison railroad that gov
ernment ownership of the railroads Is
coming. The government now under
takes to run one-half of them the
receipts. But you cannot run a busi
ness that way. The man who has the
other part of it the expenses will in
time throw up the job. We believe
tw eovernment ownership of the
railroads will vastly increase the cost
of the service and decrease Its effi
ciency. This is shown by the govern
ment ownership In Europe. Hamp
shire Gazette.

In the midst of war and rumors of
war the residents of Dallas slept in
undisturbed peacefulness, or made
their weekly preparations for church
last Sunday morning, totally uncon
scious that an armed military lorce,
anfontered for actual service, was even
then engaged in fierce and desperate
i rr onnrpmaev within the
.,nn of the sweetly peaceful sum
, r.t tho Sabbath bells. Amid the
inr!n. morning sunshine, the gilt
terlng bayonets Hashed defiance from
foe to foe, and wafted by the freshly
fragrant breezes the voice of bugles
gave stirring utterance of sinister
commands of martial import. Ad
oneinev retreating, on skirmish line
orTii almost hand-to-hand conflict,
the battle raged and the sound of rat
tling musketry broke harshly upon the
aylvan stillness, while the nelghhorlng
chipmunks shinned up a tree In an
effort to see and learn what In earn
hill was the matter.
Practice Warfare.
The cause of the unwonted smoke,
amell and noise was Company H's
maiden battle In mimic. Captain
Walter L. Tooze, Jr., In order to give
his men a taste-of powder, ordered a
practice march and engagement.
Company H was divided into two
platoons of 25 men each, and to every
member 30 rounds ol Diana ammuni
tion was issued. Equipped with guns,
belts, bayonets, intrenching tools, hav-
on,1 rnnteens. they were
readv for the fray. The first platoon
under command of First Sergeant
Peter S. Greenwood, Jr., left the arm
nrv st 8 a. m.. taking the Washington
and Levens street route out along El
lendale avenue, and the Guy road to a
point about one mile nor,th of the In
tersection of these two thoroughfares.
The second platoon, under command
of Sergeant L. G. Shaw, left the arm
ory at 8:30, following Main street and
the Salt Creek road to the Dunlop hill.
The first platoon took up a defensive
..ooltion lust north of the Kimball or
chard on the creek bank. The second
platoon then proceeded to an attain
upon the enemy.
Amid Paper Bullets.
After about two hours of scouting
the two bodies came into contact. For
about half an hour the "make-believe"
paper bullets flew thick and fast. The
first nlatooon had thrown up breast
works by the use of their intrenching
tools, and had selected a good place
to repel an attack. However, tnoyj
failed in properly protecting their
rear. The second platoon made their
attack upon that quarter, but had
failed to get a correct understanding
of the lay of the land before doing so,
and the result was that when they
came upon the e.iemy, they found that
there was a lot of brush between them,
thus spoiling effective fire upon their
part.
Cantain Tooze acted as umpire, and
his decision was that It was a draw.
Lieutenant Stafrln acted with the first
platoon in an advisory capacity, and
Sergeant Greenwood with the second
platoon. The boys enjoyed their hike
of nl.ont seven miles and the sham
i ,.- m.ieh mill are enger for
another one. It is this kind of train
ing that fits men for actual warfare.
Challenge Salem.

enemy's country. They will select a
