Polk County Observer J. C. HAYTER, KPI'rOH AT 13 PUBU8HKH Published Semi-Weekly at 11.60 pef Tear. Strictly In advance. Entered as second, class matter March 1, .1807, at the post office at Dallas, Oregon, under the Act of Con gress of March S, 1879. PALLAS, OREGON, DEC. 2, 1810 The way to build up Dallas is to pat- ronixe Dallas people. BIG INDOOR CARNIVAL BOYS OF COMPANY II WILL EN. TBRTAIN PUBLIC. New and Original Amusement Enter prise Planned to Raise Needed Funds For Company Treasury. THE BEST BOOSTER OF ALL. Gathered In Salem this week to help "boost" Oregon were many merchants and business men who do not even carry an advertisement In their home newspapers, and the local newspaper is everywhere recognized by men of affairs aa the greatest and best boos ter of all. O. C. Letter, the capable city editor of the Oregonlan, told these men some straight truths when his turn came to speak. He told them that a live local newspaper was the best as set any town could have; that the first thing a man did who was going to a new town was to look up the local newspapers. Commercial clubs should give the home newspapers hearty sup port, and the merchants should liber ally, patronize their advertising col umns. The place to show your pat riotism is In supporting your home newspaper. Mr. Letter closed his excellent ad dress by declaring that the man who does not boost the town by boosting his own business Is the biggest detri ment to the community A town is judged by its newspapers, and these papers do more to advance the growth and development of the town and its surrounding country than all other agencies combined. I Oregon contractors are experienc ing great difficulty In securing enough brick to keep building operations un der way. A contractor in Eugene re cently bought 295,000 at the almost prohibitive price of $20 a thousand. This in the Winter months, when building Is usually at a standstill and brick are, hard to sell at any price. The demand for brick next Spring and Summer will be the greatest ever known In Oregon, and It Is feared that the supply will prove so Inadequate as to seriously hamper building opera tions. It Is reported that the Dallas business men's organization Is fully alive to the situation and that it is al ready working to secure the establish ment of a brick yard near this city in the early Spring. The movement is timely, and it Is hoped that It will, be successful. Such an Industry cannot fail to be profitable to its owner. The establishment of a brick factory will do much to stimulate building activity ..In. Dallas and Induce property owners to replace undesirable wooden struc tures with substantia,! and modern business blocks. It Is not Improbable that the entire output of a local plant would be bought at home, although it Is certain that the- demand would be strong from every neighboring town in the Willamette Valley. Editor Flske, of the Itemlzer, de fends the city council's action In leas Ing the city hall lot for a moving pict ure show. We rather thought that he would. With Ilawley in congress from Ore gon and Ilawley as governor of Idaho, the name seems to be pretty well thought of out here In the west. Eu gene Register. VanNortwIck at his home Monday evening by the Willing Workers and the Kualness Men's classes of the Chrlstiun Church In honor of his birthday. A great Indoor Carnival will be giv en in Dallas on Friday evening, and Saturday afternoon and evening, De cember 16 and 17, in the Woodman Hall. No time nor expense Is being spared to make this carnival the ban nc-r event of the year, and one of the best, if not the- best, affair of Its kind, ever attempted in Dallas. Many things have been arranged to amuse the public, and all who attend will enjoy the time of their lives. A special train will be run between Falls City and Dallas on Friday even ing, leaving Falls City about 7 P. M., and returning, leaving Dallas about IIP. M. On Saturday evening, a spec ial train will be run from Black Rock to Dallas, leaving Black Rock about 7 P. M., and returning, leaving Dallas about 11 P. M. A large crowd is ex pected from Black Rock and Falls City. The great, wonderful, mysterious MZUMPSA" will be there; there will be the "Wild Animal Show" running full blast. The wild animal show Is composed of some of the best trained animals now appearing .before the American public; these animals can do almost anything but talk. Ther will bo "ZALLAH" the wonderful for tune teller, a treat for the young boys and girls who desire to look Into the future, and something of interest for the "old uns" who desire to look back, There will be the wonderful, awe-in spiring, roaring "Cave of the Winds. A dark place, but. too treacherous for boys and girls for love-making. This will be an Interesting amusement. Then we mustnt forget the most in teresting "Radium Dance." This Is the real sensation of the evening. It is something never before seen In Dal las. Don't fall to see It. It will be worth double the price of admission Something the children will enjoy hugely, and It will even bring mur murs of approval from the "wise old sages." Then there will be the Rocky Mountain Saloon, with the lid off. A place to drink, and licensed at thai Jlmmle" the bar-tender will fill the flowing bowl. Don't forget to visit Jlmmle's" place of business. As no drunkenness will be allowed, and a sales to drunks and Intoxicated per sons are prohibited by city ordinance, no man can buy over twenty glasses of intoxicating liquor during one even Ing the lemon juice might sour his stomach, and the management doesn't care to foot a doctor's bill. Don't ba disappointed girls. "Ar thur" will be on hand with his sweet things to eat, and his rubber to chew, le will also be well supplied with ticklers and confetti. But greater than all great things, oettcr tnan all good things, and a sensation clear through will be the Great Minstrel Show, with Its Import ed minstrel from the Hippodrome of New York. Came West directly from the Hippodrome to appear In the big Carnival. The best show of Its kind ever attempted In the history of Showdom." The great musical treat of the-evenlng. And we must not for get the wonderful, thrilling "Three Wonders," In their great tumbling stunts. There will be "Sumpson" the strong man; All Babl, the clown; and "Nero" the wonder. And say, don't forget to look for "Betsy" dressed in the latest fashion. While she is run nlng at large, suoh confirmed old bachelors as R. E. W If. W., D. D., H. O., and J. C. II. will be kept In close confinement by order of the Most Honorable Judge of the Great Justice Dispensing Kangaroo Court, Inasmuch as the Carnival Management desires to keep her until the show ends. There will be things to amuse all who come. too numerous to mention. There Is no doubt but this Indoor Carnival will be a howling success. The best music to be had will be there. Th famous "Dutch Hand" direct from the Faderland will furnish many a laugh Everybody should plan to take in the carnival at least once during the time it Is running, and see everything then but one could go twice, for the fun will be there all the time. Dallas has hud Its out-door earn I vols, but nothing of the kind now be Ing arranged for has ever been pre sented here before. The men behind It know their business, and have been connected with such enterprises In other places. The beautiful program, now In the press, will be out In about a week. It is a rare treat In Itself. Is entirely original, and highly amusing In some places. It Is a most Interi st ing little pamphlet and handles many things without gloves. 4 BUSINESS LOCALS.
