COURT HOUSE NOTES
THE HANDLING OF FRUIT.
Several boxes of strawberries packed
bytbe Salem Fruit Union were dis
played in a local grocery store a few
days ago. The fruit was of excellent
quality, carefully packed, and pre
sented a beautiful appearance. An
attractive label on the box noted that
it contained the "famous Willamette
Valley strawberries" and stencilled
on tbe corner of the box was the name
and address of the grower a Polk
county man by the way. Taken all
round, tbe display of fruit was fully
equal to the best of the world famous
Hood River variety.
Aside from the mere beauty of tbe
well packed crates of berries, there
was in the display a more important
significance. The Willamette Valley
has learned the secret of tbe celebrated
Eastern Oregon fruits and has adopted
at last tbe method which will win for
tbe products of Its own farms tbe
equal recognition which is most
undlsputably deserved.
It is not that the fruit has been sud
denly Improved iu quality, but that
Willamette Valley growers are learn
ing the art of handling and packing
it so as to set it off to the best advan
tage, to make it safer and more con
venieot to ship and surer of reaching
Eastern markets in good condition
Farmers and fruit raisers of Polk
and Marlon counties will gain incal
culable benefit from tbe work of the
Fruit Union which, as one of the pio
neers in the movement to put Willam
ette Valley fruit to the front, natur
ally gives precedence to the territory
from which it draws Its supply of
fruit and that territory lies mainly iu
Polk and Marion counties.
Tbe annual recital by the music
pupils of Miss Olive Smith closed
most successfully Tuesday night. The
program consisted of well rendered
duetts and solos by tbe advanced
students, Misses Minnie Clow, Hazel
Lorence and Georgia Martin. Tbe
Presbyterian Church, where the
recitals were held, was well filled on
both nights by a highly appreciative
audience, and the merits of the two
entertainments made the encourage
ment given theyoung performers well
deserved.

given Monday night were: Norma
Holman, Ruth Miller, Ruth Shav,
Helen, Lucile and Gladys Loughary,
Mabel Grant, Kathryn Fox, Kenneth
and Beatrice Backmann, Edgar Win

Dallas will have no opposition in
this locality when it celebrates the
Fourth of July next week and every
one will make an earnest effort to give
tbe many visitors who will come from
neighboring places an entertainment
worthy of this city, as one of the most
progressive and wide awake on the
West Side.
Ballston is building a new school
house, a new scboolhouse is being
built at Brush College, Dallas will
spend several thousand dollars on a
fine new building this summer and in
from six to eight of the smaller rural
districts plans are being laid for
securing new and modernly equipped
schoolroom. The record last year was
ton new buildings erected In Polk
county and there is every indication
that the present summer will equal if
not surpass tbe record of tbe past sea
son. Activity of this sort is highly to
be commended and speaks well for ! W'H visit the A-Y-P Exposition in
the progressive spirit of the citizens j Seattle before returning to their home
of Polk county. In the East,
Dallas-Portland Train Delayed.
The evening train from Portland to
Dallas was nearly an hour late Tues
day on account of a culvert blasted
out in the work on the Beaverton cut
off. The section gang had not been
advised of the change of schedule
which went into effect on that day
and both trains were delayed for a
time by the work on the track at that
point.
D. P. Stouffer was a visitor in Port
land, Wednesday.
H. C. Fox, of Rickreall, was a vis
itor in Dallas, Friday. -Miss
Elsie Ray went to Eugene,
Wednesday morning, for a visit.
P. M. Churchman, of Sheridan, is
visiting his daughters, Mrs. A. S.
Campbell and Mrs. C. S. Graves.
Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Stafford and
baby, of Portland, are visiting at the
borne of Mr. and Mrs. B. H. Pillar.
Mrs. John Mitchell Is a delegate
from Mistletoe Circle to the Women of
Woodcraft Convention in Portland
this week.
Mrs. F. H. Morrison announces the
regular June meeting of the H. H. C.
to be held at the Methodist Church,
Monday night, June 28.
C. L. Crider has installed a sprink
ling machine in bis store which does
excellent work in keeping the displays
of fresh vegetables In good condition.
The Dallas Free Library will be
closed on July 2 and 3, the two days of
the celebration, and no books will be j
received or loaned. The reading room
will however, remain open for all
cimers.
Tbe Children's Day Exercises will
be held at the Methodist Church, Sun
day night, an excellent program by
the members of the Sunday school
having been prepared for the occasion.
All are cordially invited to attend.
Allen and Darwin Dunkelberger, of
Reading, Pennsylvania, arrived in
Dallas, Tuesday night, for a two
weeks' visit with their brothers, Her
bert and Blair Dunkelberger. They
New College Catalogue Issued.
The catalogues for Dallas College
for the year 1909-10 have just been
completed at the Observer office. The
personnel of the faculty for the coming
year as given In the catalogue, Is es
pecially noteworthy many very mater
ial changes in the teaching force hav
ing been made. Dr. C. A. Mock will be
replaced in the departments of Greek
and Latin by Miss Hattie Teats, a for
mer graduate of the institution, Rev.
A. A. Winter will have the department
of Hebrew, Philosophy and English
Bible and C. L. Winter will hold the
chair of sciences. F. E. Fisher will
retire from the faculty but his suc
cessor has not been definitely chosen.
Mrs. Brown Entertains.
Mrs. L. u. Brown entertained a
number of friends at her home Tues
day afternoon with a pleasant 500
party. The afternoon was most enjoy
ably spent and delicious refreshments
were served. The prize for the high
est score was one by Mrs. L. Gerlin-
ger, Jr. Those present were: Mrs.
L. D. Brown, Mrs. J. H. Hollister,
Mrs. L. Gerlinger, Jr., Mrs. Arthur
Phelps, Mrs. S. B. Taylor, Mrs. S. T.
Donohoe, Mrs. E. Jacobson and Mrs.
R. L. Chapman.
Miss Lauretta Conn, of Lewisville,
was married at that place Sunday, to
Mr. Charles P. Bratt, of Bennett,
Nebraska, the Rev. S. M. Wood, of
Corvallis, performing the ceremony.
The bride is a daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Reuben Conn, who are out from
Nebraska on a visit with their son,
George, near Lewisville. Mr. and
Mrs. Bratt left Sunday for their future
home in Bennett, Nebraska.
