THE SEASON OF FOREST FIRE.
With the advent of the summer sea
son and the approach of July and
August, the two months of the year In
which damage to the forests of Ore
gon from fire reaches its maximum,
the Oregon Conservation Association
Is issuing warnings and instructions
concerning the prevention of forest
fires which deserve the attenf.Ion of all.
The advice and instructions given
in the pamphlets are worthy of a care
ful perusal by persons who intend
going on camping expeditions this
summer and by persons who are likely
to be employed in or about the heavily
timbered sections during the dry sea
son when danger from fires is greatest.
Following is the contents of one of
the little pamphlets which is being
Issued by the Association :
Oregon now sells $20,000,000 worth
of lumber a year. Of this $14,000,000
is received by employees who put it in
local circulation.
REQUIRES NO LICENSE
New
Angling Law Will Not Cause
Women or Boys Under 15
Any Annoyance.
The problem as to whether or not
the new state law requires boys under
jo years oi age or women, to secure
anglers' licenses before they will be
permitted to fish will be solved by
County Clerk E. M. Smith In a way
quite favorable to the parties under
discussion.
Basing his Interpertation of the law
on a letter received from R. O. Steven
son, the state game warden, he will
not issue licenses to women or to boys
under 15 years of age. The text of Mr.
Stevenson's letter to Mr. Smith con
cerning the matter Is as follows :
"In reply to yours of the 17th, will
say that this department has decided
that It will take no action against
women or boys under the age of 15
years. While the law technically re
uires them to have a license It does
not provide for the payment of the
same, and I believe that it was not the
intention of the makers of the law that
they should be required to have a
license. For these reasons and others
this department has decided not to
require a license from women or boys
under the age of 15 years."
Invited to "Home Coming."
Uncle Almon Cowles received an
invitation this week to attend the cele
bration of the 250th anniversary of
the town of Hadley, Massachusetts, to
be held August 1-4. Great prepara
tions are being made for the event,
and the celebration promises to be
happy "home-coming" for the loyal
sons of the Old Bay State. Old Had
ley Is one of the historic spots of the
United States. Founded In 1659, it
was the scene of numerous stirring
events during the Revolutionary War.
Many relics of the eight years'
struggle will be exhibited at the cele
bration. Mr. Cowles was a resident of
the neighboring town of Amherst fori
many years before coming to Oregon,
and he greatly regrets that time and
distance will make it impossible for
him to attend the reunion.

The Government dipper dredge No,
2 has been at work at Independence
for the past few days, dredging out a
log pond at the sawmill. TheSpauld
Ing Company has built a switch from
the depot and will haul logs from
Falls City, dumping them' in there
and rafting them to the Salem and
Newberg mills, instead of hauling
them to Newberg, as has been done
heretofore. D. A. Hodge, who has
held a lease on the Spaulding mill for
the last two years, gave up the lease
on the first of the month, and this
company will run the mill with Mr.
Hodge as manager.
New Railroad Projected.
The following dispatch to the Port
land Journal announces the inception
of a new railroad enterprise In Polk
county and one which if carried out,
will beof utmost importance: "Articles
of incorporation for a new coast rail
way were filed in the office of the secre
tary of the state yesterday morning
by Independence capitalists. The new
road is to be known as the Inde
pendence, Siletz and Pacific Railway
company. It Is capitalized for $500,000.
According to the articles, the proposed
new road is to be built from a point
near Simpson, in Polk county, to the
Pacific coast, through the Siletz
Indian reservation, Cape Foul-
weather, in Lincoln county, to be the
western terminus. The incorporators
are O. W. Taylor, D. W. Sears and H
Hirschberg."
