E. Kimball, Respected Pioneer
of Polk County.
COURT HOUSE NOTES
Although the county clork's office
has beeo open for the issuance of
aoglers' licenses less than a single
month the number of licenses taken
out by devotees of the rod and reel
already exceeds nearly two to one the
number issued to hunters during the
entire six months past. The actual
record shows 90 anglers' licenses as
against 61 hunters' licenses. All of
this would indicate that the sainted
Isaac Walton and not Nimrod, of
ancient myth, Is entitled to be regarded
as the presidlnggenius over the sports
men of Polk county.

Notice is hereby given that by virtue
of au order of the County Court, sit
ting as a board of County Commis
sioners, made and entered of record on
the 5th day of June, 1909, if the follow
ing county warrants, which have been
issued more than seven years prior to
the first day of July, 1909, are not pre
sented for payment within 60 days
from the first day of July, 1909, they
and each of them will be cancelled and
jb. Kimball, an old and honored
resident of this vicinity met his death
cy his own hand at his ranch about
three miles southwest of Dallas near
Oakdale, Wednesday afternoon.

not deem an inquest neceasarv.

having gone with a party of women
or that vicinity to a neighbors home
to spend the afternoon gathering
gooseberries. A number of the women
in the party heard the reports of the
gun with which the unfortunate man
effected his suicide, but passed it over
as a shot fired by some transient
hunter in the neighborhood.
Later in the evening, Mrs. Kimball
left for home in a buggy with the
daughter of Mr. Nelson and one of
her friends. As they entered the
yard, the Nel9on girl, who was driv
ing, was horrified to see the body of
the dead man lying so near the road
way that the wheels of the buggy
almost grazed bis head. Mrs. Kim
ball, seated on the other side of the
DUggyi was fortuuately spared the
shock of the terrible discovery and,
with great self-control, the girl drove
quietly on and allowed her to alight
from the rig at the house, still in
ignorance of the fact of her husband's
death.
This done she turned around and,
going with all possible haste to the
J. W. Robinson home, notified them
of the sad occurrence and sent Mrs,
Robinson back at once to break the
sad news to the widow. Mrs. Kimball
was prostrated when the full realiza
tion of the blow that had fallen
dawned upon her, and her condition
is considered extremely grave.
ihere is every evidence that the
suicide was committed deliberately
and was carefully planned before-
hand. The gun had been fastened
with a chain to a tree and a string
attached by means of a pulley in such
a manner thatone could stand directly
discharge

He received the charge point blank
in the throat severing the jugular
vein and the wind pipe, death result
ing In a few moments. For a long
time he had been despondent and ill
ana delusions resulting from his
melancholy condition are supposed to
have lead up to his rash act of self
destruction.
Ji. Kimball was born in 1830 in the
state of Ohio, and crossed the plains
to Oregon at the age of 22, settling Thos Turnbill
first near Smithfleld and afterward P'rs- Edward Goldsmith
movlog to the place where he lived at
the time of his death. He was one of
the volunteers in the Indian War in
1856, serving through the entire cam
paign with great credit to hiirifielf.
His wife, one son, Allie, of Salmon
Kiver, and two daugnters, Mrs. Ben
Thompson and Mrs. J. W. Robinson,
or this vicinity survive him. The fun
eral will be held from the family resi
dence this afternoon at 2 o'clock, and
the remains will be interred in the old
cemetery near the Odd Fellows ceme
tery southwest of this city.
