The way to build up Dallas u to pat
ronize Dallas people.
THE BUILDING SEASON.
At tbe outset of tbe summer of 1909,
every indication points to an active
and prosperous season In building
lines. One of the best seasons, in tbat
respect, tbat the city ever experienced
was the summer of 1907, wben between
150 and 200 new bouses were erected
within a period of only a few months.
During the following summer, In
1908, although the growth of the city
still continued, building activities
were in a large measure suspended,
and the season was not so much one
of growth as of development and ad
justment. The present summer opens,
however, under most favorable omens
and gives promise of a resumption of
the building boom that characterized
the summer of 1907.
Many causes conspire to produce
this promising situation. The oer-
tainty that tbe Dallas-Salem railroad
will be completed and la operation
within the next four months, the influx
of new citizens who have come west
ward on the tide of the 1909 colonist
movement, and the numerous sales of
real estate that have marked the busi
ness of the past few months, all augur
a rapid and steadily increasing
growth in population.
Any extensive growth In population
must imperatively call for more
houses, since there are scarcely mori
than enough to accommodate the
people of the city as its population
now is. New additions to the cltv are
to De opened and new suburban tracts
claimed by the incoming bomeseeker.
All or this will call insistently for
more houses.
Several property owners in Dallas
have already foreseen the demand
and a number of new residence build
ings are even now in process of con
struction. This is probably onlv the
beginning however, and there Isevery
reason to believe tbat by the middle
of the coming summer Dallas will be
in the midst of one of the most
extensive "building booms' that has
been experienced for years.

Does petroleum exist In paying
quantities in Polk county or not?
This question, it appears, is to bedell
niteiy settled within a few months aud
the first step toward its solution will
be made in the sinking of an oil well
oq iD8B. r: wniteaker farm about 4
m lies southeast of Dallas. Th is work
will be undertaken by the Willamette
Valley Oil & Gas Company, incorpor
ated in Portland last April with 75000
shares at $1 par value, for the purpose
or thoroughly prospecting for oil at
the points in the Willamette Valley
wnere indications of it3 presence are
most favorable.
N. M. McDaniel, president of the
new company, and Messrs. C. S. Shea,
W. a. Whiteaker, and Chester L,
Jfroebstel, all of Portland, were in
Dallas this week and outlined their
project before the members of the
Merchants' Protective Association at
its meeting Wednesday night.
Mr. McDaniel says that the purpose
is to sell enough stock to purchase the
ueuessury macmnery ana pay run
ning expenses and to drill one or more
wells In the most favorable places,
driving them to such depth that the
question of the existence or oon exist
ence or oil in those places may be
nnaily settled beyond any possibility
of a doubt.
The company has leased the B. F.
Whiteaker farm near Monmouth, con
taining 720 acres and the W. W. Fawk
farm of 320 acres lying in Holmes
Gap, and has options for leases on
other places where the prospect for oil
is considered exceedingly good. The
first attempt will probably be made on
the Whiteaker farm, since Mr. Whit
eaker was the first to offer his farm
for lease and the first to take stock in
the enterprise.
A standard diamond drill will be
used, the entire cost of the machinery
being estimated at about $4500. The
wells will be drilled to a depth of 3000
feet unless oil is struck before the
drill has penetrated so far. It is
thought that the oil will be struck at a
depth of between 1800 and 2500 feet,
but the company purposes to go
farther if necessary for the sake of
absolute certainty.
Beside the oil prospect on the White
aker farm, It is the intention of the
company to open up the old salt pros
pect which was operated with success
for some time in 1849 by B. J. White
aker, who crossed the plains and
iuloicu ai tuai place 10 lolo. r TOW a
well only 78 feet in depth he seoured a
flow of artesian salt water from which
he reduced and sold tons of salt. Six
years ago a well in prospect for oil
was drilled near the location of the
old salt well. At a depth of 480 feet a
flow of strong artesian salt water was
encountered which thwarted the
search for oil.
The plan suggested is to reopen this
abandoned well and pipe the salt
water to Dallas, where by utilizing the
ruei that may be secured from the
waste products of the sawmills, it may
be cheaply and profitably reduced. A
test has shown that the strength of
the water is such that a gallon and a
half will reduce to a pound of salt.
Mr. Proebstel, of Portland, one of
the expert geologists on whose opinion
and advice tbe company was organ
ized to embark upon itsblgoll project.
spoke briefly to the assembly, giving
the reasons why he is absolutely cer
tain in his own belief, that oil will be
found at the Whiteaker farm and at
tne Holmes Gap prospect. Mr. Proeb
stel finds three places in this portion
of the Willamette Valley which seem
the most promising for oil. These
are the bills near McMinnville, those
near Holmes Gap and tbe slopes
about Mount Pisgah, on the sides of
which the Whiteaker farm is located.
These three places were apparently
formed at the same geological period
and correspond almost exactly in con
tour and formation with the oil fields
of Bakersfleld, California, and the
newly opened and wonderfully pro
ductive oil fields of Alaska. The
presence of the salt wells on the White
aker farm be regards also as a highly
ravorawe indication, since this phe-
uuiuouuu uas peen iounil In 95 per
cent or tne productive oil wells tbat
have ever been sunk in the world,
Mr. Proebstel regards the failure of
the two previous DIMBner-ta nn tho
Whiteaker farm as signifying noth
ng. una well was drilled to a dupth
of only 2G0 feet before It was abandoned
and the other to a depth of 9M foot
If oil and gas exinta In tbe Wil
lamette alley as I firmly believe it
does," says Mr. Proebstel, "it should be
encountered at a depth not greater
man auuo ieei or at least between 1800
and 2500 feet. The deeper of the two
former wells was drilled only half far
enough and the failure to strike oil in
it does not io tbe least Indicate tbat
