of in Judge Burnett's Department.
A WEB OF PROSPERITY,
The Willamette Valley is now la the
beginning of a new period of develop
ment the age of rural electric rail
ways. Most of the roads are still
existent only on paper it is true, a few
perhaps In process of construction
and a few in actual operation, but
already the imaginary web work of
railways up and down the Willamette
Valley between its principal towns
and cities, is beginning to have its
marked influence for the increasing
prosperity of this section of the state.
Men who are well qualified to judge
values, are investing heavily In Wil
lamette Valley real estate and almost
invariably, as may be noted, the land
for which they spend their money is
intersected on the map, by one of those
many thin lines that indicates where
an electric railway Is to be laid. One
of the points on which the greatest
stress was laid in the reports of the
sales of the famous Broadmead farm
near Ballston in Polk county, and the
Lownsdale orchard in Yamhill county
was the fact that they lay under the
path of one of these projected railways .
Men who are investing extensively
in the fine horticultural land of Ore
gon, fully realize the Importance of
those imaginary lines, each one of
which means a speedy and convenient
avenue of traffic between the rural
communities and the large trade
centers in the near future. And tbey
fully realize also, that the day which
marks the completion of these pro
jected roud and actually establishes
direct communication with the large
centers of trade, will mark an upward
movement Id the values of the lands
which they have bought, that means
fortune to them.
In the network of projected railways,
Polk County is situated most fortu
nately. In addition to the twoSouthern
Paciflo lines already running through
it, and the Dallas-Falls City line that
has been In operation for over five
years, two more lines are to be built,
une, tne JJailas-Salem branch of the
Balem, Falls City & Western, is
already in process of construction.
The other, a branch or the Oregon
Electric system soon to be built, strikes
through the county from north to
south, cutting through some of the
most fertile farming land In the state.
All of this means that Polk county,
with all of its remarkable resources,'
is soon to be placed In perfect touch
with the market centers where Its pro
ducts may be disposed of to the best
advantage. The certainty of that fact
makes It sure that land values in the
county are destined to advance posi
tively and rapidly and the develop
ment of the county in the coming J
decade will probablv exceed that r
the past score of years.
Judge Burnett's department of olr-
cuit court for the May term was
adjourned late yesterday evening
after a busy session lasting four days.
The local option cases Introduced
from the findings of the grand jury
which was dismissed Tuesday after
noon, attracted a large degree of Inter
est during the remainder of the session.
Of the three cases brought up, one
against Thomas Sullivan, was con
tinued, a conviction followed by a fine
of $300 was secured against E. Owens
in another, while the defendant In the
third case, John fliltibrand, withdrew
his plea of not guilty and entering a
plea of guilty, was fined $100 and
costs. Evidence in the case against
Mr. Owens was furnished mainly by
O. F. Parker and C. W. Demorest, of
Portland, two detectives in the employ
of the anti-saloon league, who served
as witnesses in the local option cases
in the justice court last month.
The case of F. Moyer against the
Polk County Mill & Lumber Coin paDy
occupied the greater part of yester
day's session. Mr. Moyer was suing for
damages against the company for
njuries received while in its employ.
a. a. Latourette, of Portland, was
attorney for the plaintiff and Oscar
Hayter for the defendant. The jury
retired shortly before 6 o'clock and at
AS returned a verdict ic favor of the
defendan t.

The price of hogs broke a record for
the present season Wednesday by a
ale within the 24 hours of a lot at
$7.90 These were the supplies sent in
luesday by Moorehead & Hoctor of
Uoldendale and weighed on an aver
age of 277 pounds. In quality the
Ooldendale arrivals were the best
received here during the present sea
son and compared most favorably
with any of the corn fed stuff received
this season from the east. The sale of
the Ooldendale lot of hogs at the
highest price of the season indicates

afternoon, R. E. Williams being ap
pointed administrator of the estate
with will annexed, the bond being

With the exception of Mrs. Glen
Butler, daughter of Alonzo Brown, his
deceased son, the only direct beneflc-
aries of the will were his thred sons.

deceased son, Alonxo Brown, is be
queathed the brick buildings occupied
by the Castle grocery store and the
Dallas National Bank, with the
ground on which they are built.
The residue or his estate is directed
to be turned over to a trustee who
shall hold It ror ten years in trust ror
the children or the deceased, collecting
and dividing among them periodically
the income from that source. At the
end of 10 years this portion or the
estate is to be equally divided among
the children. Money, notes, etc , arter
all just debts and funeral expenses
are paid, he has directed to be divided
equally among bis children.
