THE SCHOOL QUESTION.
A meeting has been called for Wed
oesday, May 19, for the purpose of
discussing plans for erecting a Dew
schoolhouse in this district. At that
meeting, a solution for the problem
that confronts the district will
probably be found.
The vote by which the proposition
to bond the district for $40,000 was
defeated last week was not directed
against the educational growth of the
community nor yet against the board
that directs its school affairs. The
voters of the district hare an earnest
desire to see its school prosper and
place the utmost confidence in the
administration of its school board.

defeated the bonding proposition was,
as the general sentiment of the public
seems to show, directed against
nothing but the uncertainty of the
plan.
The idea of voting . heavy bonds
with the Idea of not using all, "only
what is needed" appears distasteful to
the majority of voters ofi account of
its indefiniteness. Given a- definite
demand, with an adequate knowledge
of the reasons therefor, there are few
of the citizens of the district who
would be unwilling to meet it.
If, at the school meeting that has
been called, a definite outline may be
given of just what additions, charges
or improvements are required, to
gether with a statement of the amount
necessary to meet the demand, there
is every reason to believe that the
amount asked for would be voted
practically without opposition.
J road mead farm, or as more
familiarly known the Ladd and Beed
farm, located in Yamhill and Polk
Counties, consisting of 3000 acres, has
been bought by Portland investors.
Broad mead farm is probably the best
known large tract in a single holding
in Western Oregon, and for years has
been famous as a stock and farming
tract.
The purchase was made by a syndi
cate composed of L. B. Menefee, D. E.
Keasey, J. B. Patterson and George
Akers, and through the agency of
D. E. Keasey & Company the property
was transferred to the Columbia Trust
Company. The consideration is re
ported to be about $200,000. About
600 acres was retained by Menefee and
Keasey, including the big farmhouse,
the intention being to modernize the
house and make of it a country home
for the two families of the owoers.
The Southern Pacific runs directly
through the property, the distance
from Portland beiDg 42 miles. The
Sheridan and Dallas junction is in
the heart of the tract, and the pro
jected line of the McMinnville branch
of the Oregon Electric road also runs
through the property. The proposed
townsiteof Broadmead will be located
at the junction, which provides an
ideal location for a new town, there
being already sites engaged for a
hotel, general store and blacksmith
shop. The trust company is to act as
selling agent for townsite lots and
acreage.

of this property was
brought about by J. B. Patterson, who
was a long-time friend of the Beeds in
California. He is very enthusiastic
over the farming prospects in Oregon
and is eager to have the large farms
n Western Oregon cut up into small
tracts so as to provide homes for
families of moderate means. The
trust company announces that it is to
be its policy in placing the Broadmead
tract on the market to make easy
terms with purchasers and sell on the
installment plan.
The farm was owned by Ladd and
Reed for many years and was devoted
to the raising of fl tie cattle and horses.
The farm produced the only curload of
red clover seed ever grown in the val
ley, and it was the pioneer In this culture.
A number of orchards have been
started on the farm and there are 100
acres set out in English walnuts, the
trees being now two years old. The
lands have been pronounced excellent
for these purposes as well as for vege
table and small fruit raising. The big
tract has been kept in an excellent
state of cultivation for many years
and there are miles of drainage tiling

Bitan will leave the work of superin
tending the sawmill In the hands of
his son-in-law, Mr. Hamilton. His
predecessor, G. W. Cone will move lo
Newberg, where the Cone Lumber
Company has an extensive business-

report of the schools of Polk county
for the month ending April 16, shows
69 schools in session in the county
with a total enrollment of 2725 at the
end of the month. Allowing for pupils
that have been dropped or transferred,
the average number belonging is rated
at 2340. The average daily attendance
during the month was 2204 or 94.2 per
cent.
The following schools are placed on
the Roll of Honor for attendance hav
ing made 95 percent or more: Dallas,
Smithfleld, Ballston, 8alt Creek, Mon
mouth, Ward, Perrydale, Gooseneck
(100,'), BruBh College, West Salem,
Buell (100), Popcorn, Upper Salt
Creek, Lincoln, Greenwood, McCoy,
Black Rock, Pioneer, Mountain View,
Mistletoe.
The following schools were placed
on the Roll of Honor for not having
any tardies : Smithfleld, Pedee, Bridge
port, Lewisville, Salt Creek, Parkers,
Ward, Brush College, Buena Vista,
Buell, Harmony, Greenwood and Oak-hurst.
Adjudged Insane.
A. J. Harris, from near West Salem,
was brought to Dallas, Tuesday, for
examination before Judge Ed F. Coad,
who adjudged him insane and ordered
his com mittement to the State Insane
Asylum in Salem. Mr. Harris received
an injury on his head some time ago
by falling from a wagon. For several
weeks after the accident the symptoms
of the mental derangement were not
very noticeable. Gradually he grew
worse and he was taken to California
by relatives, in hopes that the change
would work a cure. Their efforts
were fruitless, however, and his insan
ity finally became so pronounced that
it was deemed wise to have him sent
to the asylum for treatment Sine
his mental trouble is quite evideutly
due to the Injury he received, it Is
hoped that surgical treatment may
restore nis reason.
