OREGON'S DAIRY PROSPECT.
Id an interview to one of the Port
land papers recently, K. C. Eldridge,
manager of tbe Independence cream
ery, seems inclined to take a rather
pessimistic view of dairying con
ditions in Oregon at present, claiming
that there are less dairy cows in tbe
state than there were a year ago, and
that tbe output of butter and cheese
during the past year, has been less
than in the year preceding.
Even if these be granted true, there
are other statements made by Mr.
Eldridge in his interview, which,
properly weighed, show that the situ
ation is not so bad as one might be
lead to believe and that the conditions
of tbe past twelvemonth do not neces
sarily point to a serious or permanent
decline in the dairying Industry.
The decrease in the number of dairy
cattle in the state Is blamed mainly to
tbe fact that a large portion of the
Oregon stock have been shipped into
Washington and sold to dairymen of
that state. The depletion of Oregon's
dairy herds has therefore been really
nothing morethao an incident in the
growth of the dairying industry of
the Pacific Coast as a whole and is a
cuuuiuou waicD win prooaoiy nod aa
automatic adjustment when the
increased demands from the state of
Washington have been filled and Ore
gon dairymen may turn their atten
tion once more undivldedly, as many
of them are already doing, to the work
of replenishing their own herds.
The scarcity and the high price of
feed during the past year Is also an
Incidental and not a permanent factor
in the dairying Industry and is a con
dition which is liable at almost any
time to be met with. The depression
of the dairying business occasioned
by a circumstance of that nature, how
ever, can never be anything more
than temporary and will have no
lasting ill effects on the business.
Another factor said to have figured
in tbe smaller output of butter and
cheese this year is the fact that con
densors, which are becoming con
tinually more numerous' throughout
the state, have taken up much of the
milk that would otherwise have gone
to the dairys. This condition, like the
two mentioned before, is also Inci
dental and temporary and, contrary
to its being a detriment to the dairy
business, should be regarded as the
forerunner of Increased prosperity.

The supply of milk, already not
more than sufficient to supply the
creameries and cheese factories, had
to be divided to meet the demands of
the new industry the condenser.
But while, as a result, the output of
butter and cheese was temporarily
diminished, the demand for milk
suffered nothing.
The dairying industry is not, then,
on the decline as might be inferred
from the statements made as to its
condition during tbe past year. The
supposed decline, if it may be regarded
as such, has been merely pause pre
paratory to a rapid and stable growth
in the near futuie. The dairying
business In Oregon Is yet young and
is still too far from its zenith for one
to have serious fear of Its decadence.
Falls City Resident Is Dead.
T. L. Rawsora died at his home in
Falls City, Monday, from an attack of
paralysis. Mr. Rawsom was about 63
yeats of age at tbe time of his death.
He bad been living in Falls City only
a snort time and, having purchased
himself a farm near McMInnTllle,
was just preparing to mora to
that city with his family when
death overtook blm. He la survived
by bit wife and several children. Tbe
funeral will be held Saturday or Sun
day. The body Is blng retained until
one of bis daughter from Toledo,
Ohio, can reach Falls City.

Mr. Walter B. York and Miss Mabel
E. Gray were married at the home of
Mr. and Mrs. Bert Wells last Sunday
afternoon at 3:30 o'clock, the Rev.
M. B. Young officiating. The wed
ding was quiet, only a few near
relatives of the contracting parties
being In attendance.
Mr. York recently came here from
Dayton and secured employment In
the Willamette Valley Lumber Com
pany's sawmill. A few days ago he
was joined by his bride-to-be, the
young lady also being a resident of
Dayton, it being tbe intention of the
young people to be quietly married
and thus happily surprise their rela
tives and friends. News of their
Intentions in some manner reached
Dayton, however, and the would-be
surprisers were themselves surprised
when tbe parents and two sisters of
tbe groom and tbe mother of tbe bride
arrived in Dallas promptly in time to
attend the ceremony.

have rented a cottage in East Dallas
and have already begun house
