With the month of April still nearly
an Inch "shy" of the normal amount
of rainfall, last nights showers which
fell Id practically every section of the
Willamette Valley, while they lacked
considerable of being enough to bring
the month up to its standard, will be
worth thousands of dollars to fanners
and horticulturists. Every drop that
fell may be regarded as almost worth
Its weight In silver, as subsequent'
harvests will show.

District Attorney Upon Request of
Anti-Saloon League Decides To
Discontinue Prosecution.
Actual packing operations will be
begun in the Swift plant in Portland
in July and with the beginning of
these operations, stock raisers will
awaken to the fact that they are faced
by a demand for bogs, which will, for
a time at least, be beyond their power
to supply. With this demand con
fronting them, the industry will
undergo a sudden and important rev
olution and the raising of swine, here
tofore pursued by farmer mainly as a
side issue in their agricultural work,
will shortly develop into one of the
most important industries and most
fruitful sources of wealth to the farm
ing man, in the state.
H. IX Staats, of Lewisville, was a
visitor in Dallas, Saturday.
D. J. Riley went to Portland this
afternoon on a business visit.
H. W. Bancroft, of Fails City, was
a visitor in Dallas yesterday.
George Morton left this aftt-rnoon
for an extended stay in Seattle.
Mrs. Eugene Byerley returned this
morning from a visit in Salem.
Fritz Gerlinger will leave tomorrow
for a three months' visit in Germany.
Willis Simonton is quite ill and has
been confined to his room for several
days.
Miss Cecil Blessing went to Port
land this afternoon for a few days'
Visit.
Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Caldwell, of
Perrydale, were visitors in this city
today.
D. D. Goode came in from Pedee,
Friday, for a short business visit in
Dallas.
At the request of the Anti-Saloon
League, the District Attorney has
decided to drop the local option cases,
'two of which were tried last week and
resulted in mistrials and six of which
(one a retrial) were set for hearings to
begin today.
In explanation of their movement
to have the prosecution suspended,
the representatives of the Anti-Saloon
League stated that the first two cases
has resulted in mistrials and there
was every indication that the outcome
i of the remaining cases would be the
same. They were therefore unwilling
to subject the taxpayers of the county
j to the heavy expense of carrying on
J a series of prosecutions which seemed
I almost certain to be without satisfac
tory result.
District Attorney Sibley made his
formal announcement Saturday to
Oscar Hayter, the attorney for the
defense in the six cases yet untried,
that the prosecution had decided to
drop them.

Farewell Surprise Party.
A pleasant surprise party was given
at the home of Mr. and Mrs. T. D.
Phillips, Saturday night in compli
ment to Mr. and Mrs. W. I. Reynolds
land son, Willis, who left Dallas this
I week for their new home iD Marion
county. About 50 guests were present
and the evening was spent in a
delightful social manner, a delicious
luncheon being served during the
evening.
The Hillsboro mohair pool, con
taining about 5,556 pounds, was sold
Monday to A. J. Ray & Son, of Port
land, at 24 cents. The hair was of
fine quality and the price received Is
really the top of the market, although
some stress is laid by Polk county

pool of that county, where it is said
that notwithstanding the higher figure
owners netted the same amount as the
Hillsboro pool, as the half cent above
the local price was absorbed as com
mission by the manager. Hillsboro

The Polk County pool aggregated
about 77,000 pounds (something like
15 timos the size of the Hillsboro pool)
the share put in by a single mohair
raiser being, in many cases, nearly as
great as the entire pool sold In Wash
ington county last week. While It
should be a comparatively easy matter
to secure a small pool of sufficiently
excellent quality to warrant the highest
market price, a pool the size of the
one receutly sold in Polk County,
which is uniformly excellent enough
to command such a price, is something
out of the ordinary and is worthy of
having considerable stress laid upon
it.
Sheriff J. M. Grant was an official
visitor in the Buena Vista neighbor
hood today.
M. B. Grant visited over Sunday
with his wife who is under medical
care in McMinnville.
W. H. Dancy, of the Pacific Tele
phone Company, was over from Salem
today for a short business visit in
Dallas.
Mrs. Nancy Wise, of Perrydale, was
in Dallas today enroute for Bridge
port to visit her daughter, Mrs. A. W.
Plankinton.
A number of tho property owners on
Oak and Church streets have already
had the construction of cement curb-
ings begun about their property in
preparation for the grading and
macadam work which will be begun

The newly organized baseball team
of Dallas College was lined up against

window of Stafrin's drug store this
afternoon a portion of the exhibit
which the children have been pre
paring for the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific
Exposition. The work is all extremely
neat and well gotten up and is highly
creditable to the children who have
labored so conscientiously in their
efforts to produce a good exhibit.

attended the W. C. T. U. Institute
which was held in Independence last

received an invitatlou Wednesday to
be present at the opening ceremonies
and promptly accepted. Oregon will
have a prominent place at the Seattle
fair and Oregon's chief executive
will be one of the most prominent men
at the opening day.
J. H. Hearde, who appeared in
Dallas last Full with his theatrical
company, is again in this city
endeavoring to arrange for putting
on a musical comedy with home
talent. Mr. Hearde has been pro
moting home talent entertainments in
different valley towns for several
months and has met with excellent
