HORTICULTURAL COURSE
Farmers May Study lp-To-Date
Methods By Special Lectures
at Agricultural College.
State Superintendent J. H. Acker
man has prepared a tabulated list of
the months of schooling in the various
counties of Oregon, for the purpose of
Illustrating the value of a bill calling
for six months schooling uniformly
throughout the state. In Polk county
alone the list shows that in four dis
tricts they have only four months of
school. In five districts only five and
in 13 districts only six months. In
many of the other counties, the fig
ures show an even greater proportion
of districts having only four or even
three months of school in a year. The
pupils in public schools of short teims
must labor under an enormous hand
icap in comparison with those of the
districts in which longer terras have
been arranged. The only way in
which opportunity may be equalized
and justice given to all who come
under the jurisdiction of our state
educational system, is by making the
length of term, in rural districts at
least, uniform, and by making its
minimum sufficient that the footing
of the rural and city schools may be
more nearly equal. The effort which
is being made to bring these circum
stances about is to be highly commended.
A six weeks' course in horticulture
is now under way at the Agricultural
College, Corvallis, Oregon, and the
attendance from different parts of the
state being more than double that of
last year. Some of the most Interest
Ing work in the course is yet to come
Many fruit-growers are unuble to at
tend the course for the entire six
weeks, but are able to come for a few
days or several weeks. The course is
open to them at any time. There will
be two weeks more of apple packing
and work iu budding and grafting.
In addition tothis, special lectures are
given on the various (ilias-s of fruit
growing, truck gardening and laud
scape gardening.
Beginning February 8, a fpeeial
course of two weeks will be giwn in
walnut grafting. The most important
methods of walnut grafting will be
taken up, including the very success
ful and famous Payne method. In
addition to the lectures, practice will
be given in the work including'
nursery grafting, and the fop-work- j
ing of the large American black wal-!
nut trees found scattered over the
State.
During the last two weeks of the
course two hours a day of practical
instruction will be given in spraying,
pruning, staking aud setting of
orchards. This work includes apples,
grapes, peaches, cherries, etc.
Special lectures will be given by
some of the best authorities on horti
culture to be found in the Northwest. I
These courses are open to any one j
interested in horticulture.

"Maudlin sentiment," a good, old,
well-worn stock expression, comes to
hand with admirable aptness todesig
uate that eptcif-s of sympathetic
hysteria which leads the Humane
Society to start a movement for a
national petition from the children of
the United Stat'-s, urging President
Roosevelt to give up his African
exdition on the grounds that "the
slaughter of wild game, as now
practiced, Vi no matter what purpose,
gives an impulse that is opposed to
our efforts as members of the Hand of
Mercy." As Mr. Roj.evi-lt is contrary
to being a sentimentalist, a man ot
Intensely practical thought and
action, he will no doubt give that
touching appeal exactly what it
merits his polite disregard. The
scheme of using the Influence of
children to obtain an end, is no newer
than it is laudable. The same plan
has been usee) to forward missionary
schemes, help out in efforts to secure
the enactmnnt of p"t laws and once it
was attempted to raise fund-i for send
ing Captain Peary on nun of his
periodical and fruitless dashes.

enough to weep over; their -ff ct on
the average person is a state of dull
