Gave Pleasant Dance.
The dance given by the social com
mittee of Company H, Saturday
evening, was a vpry pleasant even
and a good-sized crowd of dancers wa
In attendance. The committee had
been planning a leap year dance for
New Year's eve but has decided to
postpone it on account of the Falls
City and Independence dances to be
held on the same night. Other dances
are planned for a later date and the
committee expects to make them the
best attended and most enjoyable of
the year.
The Dallas basketball team, which
is to tour the Middle West this Winter
will have a spleDdid opportunity to
advertise the enterprising city from
which it hails. The members and
managers of the team will meet large
numbersof people who will be anxious
to learn something of Oregon. The
name of their team will become well
known in the cities they visit. The
trip was wisely planned. May it be
successful in every way. Oregonian
D. M. Guthrie left this afternoon for
a visit with relatives in California
and Missouri. He expects to be gone
at least four months. Mr. Guthrie Is
one of the early pioneer of Oregon
and has not been back to his old home
in Missouri fur more than 50 years.
Frank B. Windsor, of Pulk county,
and Miss Louise M. Willard, of Yam
hill county, were married at the home
of the officiating clergyman, Uev.
A. M. Williams, Wednesday, Decern-
ber 16. Theywill reside on the groom's

Was Pioneer Resident.
The Sheridan Sun gives the follow
ing brief biographical sketch of Val
entine Sears, who died at his home
near Ballstou, Monday, December 14.
"Valentino Sears was born In (what
wits then Floyd county, Indiana,) Dec
ember l), 1825. While a young man he
was married to Sarah Ann Boston.
Himself, wife and family of two sons
emigrated to Oregon in 1853. They
settled at Salt Creek, Ik county.
Afterwards they moved to Tillamook
county, when- his faithful help. mate
died In 1883. After residing in Tilla
mook for it few years he again came
to Polk county. Ho died at Ballstou,
December II, 11)08, aged 83 years and
C days. Ho is survived by his two
sons, Jonathan, or Hillsboro, Charles,
of li.-aver, Tillamook county, six

Are You One of Them.
The housewife who has been induced
to buy a phosphate baking powder by
grocers or canvassers will be some
what chagrined to learn that this
character of goods is made from
burned bones mixed with diluted oil
of vitriol.
It seems that there is no law com
pelling these long shot boys to print
the ingredients on tbe can and hence
the consumer is easily deceived. Goods
of this class cost very little to manu
facture about 3 or 4 cents per pound,
not much more than the price of the
bone or alum from which they are
made.
We find upon Investigation, that
the only real baking powder is made
from cream of tartar, soda, and a
small per cent of starch to add to Its
keeping qualities. All the irood
brands have the ingredients printed
