MODERN SILO
CONSTRUCTION.
The farmers of the corn licit are com
ing to realize mure nnd .re the value
of silage an a cheap, succulent feed.
For dairy cows it is almost indispensa
ble if the best results are to be ob
tained. Experiments at various sta
tions show that It may also be used
successfully for fattening steers, sheep
and even bogs. To aid farmers in se
lecting the type of silo best adapted to
their conditions the Iowa experiment
station has made a thorough investiga
tion of silo construction and issued a ,
bulletin on the subject, from which th J
following Is taken:
Of t lie silos reported by their own
ers or visited. 1:55 were located outside j
of the barn and 2'i inside. Those lo- j
cated inside of a building were largely
of a type not well adapted to lie placed
outside. These reports indicate that
a location of the silo outside of all
buildings meets with greater favor
among those using silos. There are
good reasons fi r this. First, the silo,
with the exception of a few types, is
of such a construction that it does
not need the pn ii'clicn of ti covered
building. Siv oial. It is nut economical
to place a l!o in a building whore It
will occupv spice which mav be tut
to other use. Third, a silo located in
side of a bulldng is often unhandy to
fill. The fora-re cannot lie delivered to
the cutter conveniently. Fourth, by
locatliiL' a s:!o out-ide of the building
and only connecting it thereto with
a passage pra' itli il Willi doors, the ob
jectionable odor of the silaire may be
kept out of the bni!, ling. Hy arrang
ing the silo so as to ha connected to
tiie feeding room with a feed way, It
should lie ns convenient for feeding as
when located in the building itself. A
very common arrangement Is to so lo
cate the silo that the passage way
from silo to barn Is a continuation of
the feed way in the barn. In general.
It Bcems that there are few advantages
in building a silo Inside of a building
and many in building it outside.
bijtiare silos are practically a thing
of the past. They were developed be
fore the round silo, but generally gave
trouble by the bulging of the straight
sides and the spoiling of the silage in
the corners. In addition to this the
material of construction Is not so eco
nomically used or distributed to resist
rim ess dc-ci.(!s larsreiy, however. iiion
the moile d of i onstnn tioii. material
used alio care that is taken of the silo.
A few years ago it could have been
said that concrete silos were in the
experimental stage, but now it has
been demonstrated by the success of
many of them that concrete is oue of
the best building materials from which
to construct permanent silos. Consid
ering that the general use of concrete
has been develo)ed within a very fen
years and the majority of concrete
silos have !eon built bv men with lit
tle or no experience the success of the
! concrete silo has been remarkable.
I The silo may lie made an ornament
I lo any group of farm buildings. Its
i form Is such that it may be made to
J add to the npcaranee of any style of
I construction. One or more conical silo

.'man estimates that II lakes from oiie
j half lo one-third less corn on alfalfa
pasture than on a straight grain ration
fo make n bos ready for market. Many
farmers let the hogs run on alfalfa un
til they nre six months old. by which
lime they reach n weight of seventy -five
to li", pounds, feeiliug just a little
fc-raln. Then they feed heavily for
about two months nnd sell the hogs
ut eight mouths old weighing '2iK) to
L'l'j pounds. Une farmer who raises
about n thousand hogs nnuually nnd
who In one year Hold ifll.-'W worth of
hogs makes n practice of raising his
swine on alfalfa pasture until about
eight months old, feeding one ear of
corn n head daily. He then feeds corn
heavily for a mouth or two and sells
nt nn average weight of 2'K) to 225
pounds.
Another muti feeds ull the corn and
slop the pigs will cleati up, all the
while ruuuiug them on alfalfa pasture,
nud sells nt six to eight months old nt
weights of 2.-j0 to 300 pounds. An
other, who raises about a thousand
heud a year, feeds nil the corn the
pigs will eat. beginning shortly nfter
weaning nnd continuing until the pigs
nre sold nt ten to eleven months old,
averaging 27o pounds. Still another
farmer, from wenning time two
mouths old until eight months old
feeds the pigs nothing but dry corn
on nlfalfa pasture, averaging about 3'i
pounds a day for each head. At the
end of eight months he sells nt an
average weight of 2.".0 pounds. The
cjiinnllty of corn fed Is about eleven
bilKhels for each head.
While nlfalfa pus! lire has been found
very valuable for hogs, the hay us a
part ration for winter Is scarcely less
important. Throughout this whole
western region the farmers make n
practice of feeding hay to hogs
throughout the winter. The hay has
been found especially valuable for
brood sows before farrowing. When
1 during winter only n small ration
of grain is necessary to keep the sows

Sows thus fed also farrow good litters
of strong, healthy nigs. Manv feeil

Remedy For Cowpox.
Oxide of zinc ointment rubbed ou the
cow's bag morning and night is a
very good remedy for cowpox. The
disease is carried from cow to cow on
the hands of the milker, so when the
disease is in the herd milkers should
wash their hands carefully after milk
1 Ing each cow. Do not use the milk
from affected cows until thev nre
cured.
A Forcing Effect.
Fresh manure has a forcing effect
and tends to produce stems and leaves
at the expense of fruit nnd grain. It Is
therefore better for early garden truck,
jrasscs and forage plants than fur
:ereals or fruit.
