A THANKSGIVING THOUGHT.
BY DEAN COIXIS8.
The epicures of vesterdav.
This morn we struggled from our
oeas,
And noted with astonishment
The vast dimensions of our beads
Last night we thanked the powers that
stooa
Our watch and ward through good
ana Hi
Today we thank our lucky stars
mat we are in tne running still.
What feats were yesterday performed,
v oat miracles beyond all question
in gastronomic judtrlerv
And wondrous sleights of the diges
tion !
The royal roasted turkey bird,
ine sauces neb, the azure cream
Faded from off the festal board
Like airy fabrics of a dream.
The pumpkin pie, like moon of gold,
was pressed unto our rapturert lips
Ana, HK8 mat glowing lunar orb,
Suffered at once complete eclipse:
And when the midnight hour drew

When the last lightsome toast was

We passed the soothing bromides
round
And wended wearily to bed.

meet within the past summer, and
recommends that the matter be post
poned for a time.
This is well enough if only they can
bear In mind that postponement does
not mean the complete dismissal of
the subject. Too often the decision to
postpone is nothing more nor less than
a veiled funeral ceremony over a
measure of exceptional importance.
At present there is scarcely a train
leaves for Portland that does not bear
someone who is being sent to that city
to receive the medical attention that
might be given them just as compe
tently and much more quickly in
Dallas, except for the lack of a prop
erly equipped hospital. It is vain for
the people of Dallas to imagine that
the opportunity now offered them to
have such an institution established
in this city, will continue to hover
over them waiting for them to grasp
it when they feel the inclination. It
may be true that postponement is, for
the present, advisable, but thut post
ponement should not be made too long,
lest while time passes, the golden
opportunity may flit away.
The Observer is in receipt of a book
lot on Woodburn, Oregon, published
by the Woodburn Independent and
devoted to an attractive exposition of
the resources and Industries of that
city and the country around it. The
booklet is well arranged and excel
lently illustrated and should prove a
potent force in attracting emigrants
from the East into that locality if
properly distributed. This method of vs J. H. Flower et ul. damn
advertisement is ono that brings re
sults, as Is witnessed by the outcome
of Eugeno's "boosting" crusade, and
Is one that many of the cities of the
Wlllametto Valley might profit by
adopting.

Polk county has, during the pastj
month, been the scene of several I
small crimes such as burglaries BBd :
holdups, and duriDg the past two!
weeks especially, has the occu ranee
of these crimes been exceptionally fre
quent. They occur at separate times
and at different places, indicating that
a single person or party of persons is
systematically working the county in
one locality after another.
Reports of petty robberies In the
vicinityof Eola first appeared, followed
shortly by news of a hold-up near
Lincoln and on Tuesday night the
postoffice at Monmouth was entered
by burglars. Yesterday's Oregonian
contained the following report of the
crime :
"The postoffice at Monmouth was
robbed Tuesday night and while Post
master O. A.. Wolverton declines to
make any statement of the loss pend
ing the arrival of the Government
Inspector, it is thought the money loss
is small, as no more funds were kept
on hand than is necessary. The office
is located in the two-story building at
the corner of Main and Railroad
streets and entrance was made by pry
ing up the window on the west. The
safe, which was only a small fire
proof affair, was blown open. The
work shows it was done by skilled
burglars using some powerful ex
plosive, presumably nitroglycerine.
Stamps, which could have been stolen.
were left in the drawer."
The latest news in the list of reports
of crime came from Perrydale yester
day morning, the store of Hon. D. L.
Keyt having been broken into and
considerable merchandise carried
away. The exact amount of the loss
has not yet been ascertained and no
clue as to the character or the where
abouts of the criminals has yet been
obtained.
Officers are at work on the case and
it is thought that their efforts will
soon result in theenptureof the guilty
parties and put a stop to the series of
crimes that have lately plagued the
citizens or Volk county.
