SUCCESS
WITH SHEEP.
Learning of the methods which have
brought success to other business meu
has helped many a beginner to improve
every opportunity while making his
own start In a life's undertaking.
To become a true master of sheep
breeding It requires the desire to do it
correctly and to persevere for many
years In continuation. A solid founda
tion Is the first and greatest of all re
quirements, so do not start in a hurry,
but do It well, says a writer In the
Shepherd's Criterion. A few ewes of
undeniable breeding and correct Indi
vidual merit are more to be desired
than a larger number of Inferior ones.
Hooks and articles have been written
on this subject and have done a great
deal of good in scattering practical
Ideas among fresh mluds, but your
best way to gather the most reliable
Bnd practical Information is to visit the
best breeder within any ordinary dis
tance by rail. Go and stay a day or to
and have a fen- hours' conversation
with the breeder hiiiitelf, and there yon
can learn or fit-net i;ii meas win-ii
have given good results, both in feel
ing and breeding. I:y personal inter
view numerous thi.'ii's can be learned
which are hard to tell on paper.
No matter whether you are making
purchases or not. any large breeder
will bo only too plcarcd to have you go
through his (loci;. If you ; ie contem
plating the founding "C a (!-k or are a
new breeder, you will be greatly profit
ed by a visit to the largest and most
reputable breeder n Ithln your reach,
and if yon are an old breeder you
would enjoy seeing how others do
things. Sometimes I think that breed
ers miss a great deal by not having
their efforts more united. .More visits
with each other would bind them
not apt fo be satisfactory.
One acre of alfalfa In good growth
will pasture about fifteen 100 pound
shotes receiving a full feed of corn.
In selecting a hog never pick out
one that has very large bones, b!g.
round hind legs, under the Impression
that the hog is strong and Is going to
itand un. Simply because a hog has
got large bones Is no criterion that
he will stand up.
Castrate the pigs when they are
three or four weeks old. Then they are
unusually active and the wound heals
quickly and Is well before they are
weaned, causing no setback In the
pig's development.
I Cowpea Hay For Live Stock.
! Cowpea hay is very nutritious. It is
i nearly equal to wheat bran as part of
i a ration. It Is satisfactory for work
i stock and for beef or milk production,
i and it gives good results when fed to
: ioultry. The grain is a rich feed, ex
, cedent for poultry, but little used for
' other feeding.
FEEDING THE CALF.
Instinct tells her to bide, and she must
come up for feed to the hub before she
can have anything except water. This
Is generally three days. Then she can
digest and assimilate what Is given her
without playing havoc with the Utter,
which must be large enough to occu
py the table spread, which Is general
ly ten or twelve.
I do not care to allow the use or
these Individual hog pastures to sows
younger than two years old, as they
are uncertain, out ir a goaa sow is
found she should not be known as a
grass widow on the meat marts until
eight or ten years old.

; Many of the ills of calves arise from
giving them milk in poor condition. At
the creameries the vats are sometimes
j allowed to get in a very insanitary
state. They are not emptied and scald
ed out with sufficient frequency, and
sometimes washings from the utensils
are dumped Into the vats. In some in
stances the milk Is drawn back and
kept for a day or two Ijefore it can all

and otherwise deteriorate and when j
fed in such a condition does not make '
a very good food for calves. j

Such a window is made or hinged in
the opposite way from that usually
adopted for the old fashioned transom

as to allow the air to be directed down

air to be directed upward and so that
the horse Is protected against drafts.

Some attempt to reach the cost of
systematic cow testing has been made

of proper temperature or nearly so and
Is In Its constituents almost as good as
new milk for promoting growth. If
the pails in which it is kept are scald

The temperature at which milk is
fed Is a matter of much Importance.
CoM milk lowers the temperature of
the stomach and through It the temper
ature of the body. Though no further
harm should be done, the lowering of
the temperature of the body means
more food, as before any gain can re

The absurd little window lu front of
each horse lu the old fashioned farm
stable Is a positive abomination. True,
It allows the festive hen to enter and
deposit her fruit of Industry and at
the same time foul the manger and
contribute lice to the other miseries of
the III treated horse, but the worst
fault of the window Is that when thu
wind happens to blow cold and raw, as
It Is apt to do during the sudden
changes of temperature In summer and
full, the horse Is exposed to a most
Injurious draft striking directly upon
the chest, where It will lie apt to do
the most harm. The eyes, too, may
suffer from such a draft, and taken
any way one likes there Is neither use
nor sense In such a contrivance.
The stable should have the main win
dows back of the horse, mid by prefer

the front of the stalls should be above
heads of the horses and should be

A Plan to Save Time In Feeding and

I wonder sometimes how good hog
raisers can still recommend the old
styled hog house, writes a Missouri
farmer In the Ilreeder's Gazette, Chi

frozen north, where It Is winter more
than summer. I passed through the
hog house stage and went to the open-shed-to-south
style, but discarded that
some three years ago. I concluded the
swill barrel and sled were not for rne,
as the harnessed horse was a trouble
to pull the feed sled. My lots are
planned to come together In n wedge
shape, with an apex eight feet wide
running back forty rods. Eight feet
admits a wagon and forty rods long
permits the plow and long stretches of
woven wire. Each Individual hog lot Is
well sodded with a mixture of red and
