THE DELUGE.
Humanity is longBufferlng and will
endure heavy burdens for a great
while before it will break into rebel
lion. It is this trait that makes it pos
sible for such men as Abe Keuf to
build up their enormous and highly
organized syndicates of corruption
Humanity however, when the last
straw has been laid upon Its burden
and when at last tho cup of the evil
doers iniquity Is full, is likely to
respond in a whirlwind of righteous
rebellion that will sweep the offend
ing feature out of existence forever
in a single stroke. And it is this trait
that makes the punishment of Abe
Iteuf and his brood of grafters in San
Franciseo a thing inevitHble, since
the events of his long, tedious and
doubtful trial rushed to a climax in
the sensational attempt last week upon
the life of Mr. Heney, the prosecutor,
by Maui ice Haas, an ex-convict who
claimed that Heney had ruined his
life by exposing hirn.
Homo claim and believe that the
attempted assassination was direotly
inspired by Itouf or his partisans, but
such is probably not the case. After
so long pursuing a successful course
of the smoothest and most finely spun
villainy, It seems Improbable that
lteuf, tho arch-plotter, should make
the blunder of resorting to a device
which ho knew or should have the
intelligence to know, could result in
only one thing bo the attempt suc
cessful or not the precipitation of the
full tido of public wrath upon his
head.
And that is tho very thing It has
done. Whether Ileuf was tho instiga
tor of Haas' attempt or not, the peoplo
of Han Francisco recognize Haas as
the outgrowth and spuwn of the sys
tem of corruption of which Keuf was
tho creator. They realized In that
attempt, tho lengths to which that
monstrous system, unbridled, might
hurl Itself, and with that realization
has come tho awakoning and the
revulsion of public opinion which is
destined to sweep lteuf and all of the
ministers of his brokon aristocracy of
graft b'fore It into their proper places
tho cells of Han (juentln,
Mr. Honey's recovery, according to
latest reports, Is practically certain.
This being tho case. It really seems as
if the attempt upon his life wore, after
all (since it is not to turn out fatally)
tho best possible thing that could have
happened. In an instant it brought
to the support of Mr. Heney, who up
to that ti mo had been fighting the
battle in a largo measure alone, the
entire decent citizenship of Han Fran
cisco and before tho Hood of aroused
public opinion, neither tainted money
nor sluirttcr inlliience could prevail.
Haas' piitol shot sounded tho hint
knell of Iteuf's hoix-n and from this
time, his power in the city, olTof which
lie has preyed so long, Is decudont.
torn the president of the United .States
has set apart Thursday, the 2Ctb day
of November, A. D., 1908, as a day of
National Thanksgiving.
Therefore, I, George 12. Chamberlain,
as governor of the state of Oregon, do
proclaim said day as a holiday and
recommend its general observance as
one of thanksgiving.
The people of this commonwealth
have much to be thankful for. Wo
are prosperous and nappy, and the
ills which have in the past afflicted
some of our sister states have passed j
us by. A beneficent Providence has
given us a fertile soil and a delightful
and healthful climate. Our very
mountains, besides furnishing a land
scape unrivaled for scenic beauty and
grandeur, are clad perennially with
an abundance of splendid forest and
bear within their bosoms a wealth of
mine and mineral. The semi-arid
regions are being made to blossom as
the rose and are furnishing homes to
thousands of sturdy men and women.
All these are the things that make
for a better and higher civilization
and promise ever brighter hopes for a
greater Oregon.
Let us therefore suitably observe the
day set apart and repair to our usual
places of worship there to render
thanks to the All-wise Ruler of the
universe for the manifold blessings
we enjoy.
In testimony whereof I have here
unto set my band and caused the
great seal of the state of Oregon to be
hereunto affixed, this the sixteenth
day of November, 1908.
Geo. E. Chamberlain,
Governor.
