THE DEMONSTRATION TRAIN.
The Southern raclflc Demonstration
Train that passed through Dallas,
Friday, will prove an invaluable influ
ence for development in all lines of
agricultural pursuit in the Willamette
Valley, not that it enables the furmers
who visit it to grasp fully, in the brief
time in which they are privileged to
inspect the exhibits and converse with
the demonstrators, even the rudiments
of the vast subjects with which it
deals, but because It serves the pur
pose of an eye opener, a euggester, a
forecaster of possibilities and proba
bilities. The farmer, horticulturist,
or dairy farmer who goes through the
demonstration train and examines its
rnagnillcent exhibits, comes away
with his miud full of a jumbled muss
of undigested ideas, probably none of
which are of any immediate value
or benellt to him. Under this
maze of mingled fragments of
plans and and suggestions, runs a
strong, definite central thought how
ever, the thought tbut these exhibits
have portrayed not actualities but
possibilities, that they give a picture
of the agricultural industry of the
Willaiiiotte Valley, not as it is, but as
it cau be made by careful, up-to-date
and intelligent methods of farming.
And with the awakening of this cen
tral idea, comes the decision to study
the advanced methods of farming and
to mako a strong and intelligent
((Tort to real l.o the puasibiUties that
wore only hinted at in the clemoutaiy
lessons learned on tlio demonstration
train. This is ono ot tho purposes,
the principal purpose, for which the
train Is run and It is undoubtedly
achieving its end. During tho next
five years wo may look for cuormous
Htrideg in the agricultural develop
ment or tho Willamette Vulley as a
direct result of tho labors of thoso who
planned and prepared the train and
conducted it on its eight day tour of
tho Valley.

Whether the election of Alt. Ilryau
to the presidency would have brought
hard times or not, is an open question.
But it Is a certainty tliat the election
of Mr. 'I aft Is bringing good times by
putting inon formerly Idle, thousands
of them, back to work ami it is bring
ing them with a rush too.
Tho Republican party, iu spite of
Its following of false and Populistlc
gods in tho state politics of Oregon,
proved unexpectedly loyal to Its
accepted principles In the recent
National test, as is testilled by the
strong plurality given to Tort in the
presidential election last week. The
National struggle is ended, however,
and now the state polities, ror a
moment shoved into oblivion by a
larger and more compelling Interest,
are-coming again to tho rront with
abundant promises uf a Htruggle

Tho announcement that Otto F. L
Hcrse, the well known tenor, is to
visit hare Thursday, Novembers, will
arouso a great deal or enthusiasm
among the public. Recent criticisms
of Mr. Herso's singing seem to unite
at tho point or his ever Increasing
excellence, t or sheer beauty or voice
he surpasses almost every tenor ever
heard on the coast. Mr. Hcrse's
phrasing Is a thing to give the listener
joy without stint. His command of
shading and coloring Is adequate for
every least and greatest call upon It.
Some of the single tones will remain
in the memory always, for he has
every shade or color on his pallette,
and a master artist's skill in using
each. Hewill be heard here in English,
German, Scotch and Irish songs. The
Increasing popularity of this singer
all over tho country insures an enjoy
ablo evening's entertainment. Thous
and bave greeted him everywhere and
nave been charmed by the marvelous
sweetness of his voice. As a general
rule, groat singers hold themselves to
the very largo cities, but Mr. Herso
has placed on his traveling route
many or tho smaller towns.
