WRITE HISTORICAL ESSAYS
Prizes Offered To Encourage Oregon
Children In Study of Nation's
Career.
The following offer of prizes for
essays on historical subjects, made by
the Oregon Society of the Sons of
American Revolution, will be of
interest to pupils in the public schools.
The contest is open to public school
children of Oregon. For students in
the High Schools prizes of $20 and $10
will be awarded for the first and second
best essays on either "Foreign Aid in
the Revolutionary War," or "Wash
ington's Greatness In What Did It
Consist?"
Prizes of $20, $10 and three prizes of
$5 each are offered for the five best
essays written by Grade pupils on any
subject they may choose from the fol
lowing list : "The Causes of the Rev
olutionary War," "The Battle of Sar
atoga," "The Navy in the Revolution
ary War" and "The Battle of Bunker
Hill."
In judging the manuscripts, the
committee will be governed by consid
erations of originalty, accuracy of
statement, manner of treatment, orth
ography, syntax and punctuation,
neatness and legibility.
The following rules govern the con
test : Essays are limited to 3000 words
each. They must be written by the
student's own band, on one side of the
paper only, and must be accompanied
by a certificate from the writer's
teacher, stating that the writer is a
pupil in a designated class and that
the teacher believes the essay to be the
pupil's own unaided work. Essays
must be signed by the writer, giving
also his or her postofflce address and
should be sent to B. A. Thaxter, chair
man of committee, 443 Eleventh street,
Portland, Oregon. They should be
sent so as to reach their destination
not later than January 31, 1909.
The prizes are offered to encourage
in the school children of Oregon a
love of our country and a desire for a
deeper study of its history. Any
information that may be further
desired concerning the contest will be
gladly furnished on application to
Mr. Thaxter, the chairman of the com
mittee. Famous Tenor Coming.
Great interest attaches to the an
noucnement of the coming here of Mr.
Otto F. L. Herse, the gifted tenor, who
will appear in the Woodman Hall,
November 12, for a grand vocal con
cert. Mr. Herse gratifies the wish of a
host of people in this city who longed
to hear and see the noted tenor who
has scored again and again all over
the country. Mr. Herse has a beauti
ful tenor voice of unusual compass
and brilliancy. He has what is termed
a "naturally placed voice." He has
been singing since he was a child and
is really self taught, although his con
tact with master vocal artists has
rounded him to completeness. Wher
ever he has appeared crowded houses
have been the rule and doubtless will
be the case when he appears hare. His
program is made up of varied selec
tions of high class and familiar songs,
each one a gem a program that will
satisfy every individual desire, Eng
lish, German, Scotch and Irish songs.
It is not surprising that this artist's
coming is attracting so much atten
tion, since a treat of this kind is a
rare thing for this community. By all
means hear him.
Independence Will Be Wet,
The following dispatch from Salem
to the Oregonlan, declares that Inde
pendence is actually "wet" under the
recent decision of the Supreme Court
in the Med ford case, although as yet
liquor dealers of the city have taken
no steps to profit by the fact. "Though
unmentlooed in the recent Supreme
Court decision governing the sale of
liquor in the city of Medford and but
little known among the people of Inde
pendence, the charter of that town
brings the city under the Supreme
Court opinion with the cities of Med
ford, Condon and Estacada. The
Independence charter was granted in
1905, and varies from the other char
ters in the clause granting the privi
lege of licensing saloons, only in the
fact that it Is moreexpliclt and speci
fically stipulated that all acts or stat
utes iu conflict with this provision of
the charter are repealed. An attempt
will be made to secure license under
this charter for a saloon in Indepen
dence. The town is now "dry."
