"A REASON WHY."
In the niass of editorial matter on
the various phases of tho presidential
campaign, which is scattered broad
cast among the voting men of the
United States, there Is so mueb in the
utterances not only of the Democratic
organs, but, alas, too frequently in
the periodicals suppoi ting the Repub
lican ticket, which is of a weak, illog
ical nature that one is inclined to be
perhaps over-pleased when he comes
upon some article, which, devoid of
the slightest tinge of sophistry, faces
the subject squarely and argues its
case logically and convincingly on Its
ni'-rits alone, without resorting to the
use of any of the cheap trickery or
false and epeejous I'.gic which too
frequently characterizes tin; argu
ments used by the supporters of either
party in a political contest.
TLis style of argument convince no
one, can convince no one who thinks
before lie votes arel n ho studies the
subject pro and con before deciding
where he slull throw the weight of
ills support. It is the weapon of the
demagogue, designed to capture those
few men who bl' tig to tic- iiidet, r
nilnato or 'Vlic.-p herding" clus of
voters. With this class, which is
fortunately not so large u- many seem
to suppose, it is merely a matter of
who argues with them last before they j
c ist their ballot, to whose support that '
ballot Mill Ik- cast.
or promised to appoint to office any
man, as a reward for supporting Mr.
Taft, I should be as quick to criticise
as any. But there is not the slightest
evidence that be has ever done any
thing of the sort. He has simply told
the country whom be would choose to
finish the work he has begun."
Continuing, Mr. Abbot claims that
if Mr. laft la elected President, the
policy of reform, inaugurated by Mr.
Roosevelt and now barely under way,
"will be as vigorously maintained as
it has been vigorously inaugurated."
He believes that "the Government will
continue to ferret out frauds and to
punish the perpetrators already de
tected," while "if Mr. Bryan Is elected,
this whole policy will be halted for a
time necessarily halted." While the
halt will perhaps not be due to Mr.
Bryan's inability ptoerly to admin
ister thegovernment, it will inevitably
occur. "Mr. Bryan cannot help the
halt." Xew Attorney-Generals and a
new staff of assistants in Washington
will be appointed. There will be new
District Attorneys in every District in
the United States. "The present Dis- ;
trict Attorneys, who are familiar with j
the facts will retire" and "the new j
District Attorneys will require at least ,
six monthsto acquire familiarity with !
tho facts." There must inevitably be!
an interregnum, even if the newly
appointed officers are "as able and as !
honest as the present incumbents."!
But we can by no means hope that
they will all be "as honest and as
comrf-t.-nt"a-theirpiedeees-ors. Mr.
leiotevelt, in his seven year-, "has
had time to weed out the ..is cumpe
tent and he has done so." Mr. Bryan !
if elected would have the same thing!
to do with the men whom he appointed.
tor it were folly to expect him to
choose with infallible judgment and
appoint none who would not prove,
after the test, to be ineometcnt.
"The paramount issue, then, appears
to be this: Shall we continue tj the
end the campaign against political
and commercial corruption which Mr.
Roosevelt has initiated? To that ques
tion but one answer can be given.
Yes! It will te carried on with as
much vigor and effciency by Mr. TaTt
as by Mr. Roosevelt. He is Mr.

FINE GARDEN LAND
5 and 10 Acre Tracts
on Installment Plan
I expect to plat into 5 and 10 acre tracts all of the bottom land on my
farm, consisting of about 80 acres. I will sell these tracts on terms that
anyone can meet, only $10 per acre, cash. Under mv plan you will have
15 years in which to pay the balance. j This is the chance of a lifetime
for those who wi3h to secure a home on the best terms ever offered. No
one will quest ion the fertility of this soil Under my contracts I aree to
give an abstract of title with every deed. I will survey this land out
next week and it will probably be two weeks before my contracts will be
ready, but I can show you the land and you cau choose location before
that time. HThere are 20 acreB of young orchard on this tract; 18 acres
of hops; 3 or 4 acres of old orchard ; 2 or 3 miles of tile ; all under good
fence; right on main county road, one mile of Dallas and right on rail
road ; in Dallas School District, just outside the city limits.
See me at once and have first choice.
