GUILTY OF SELLING LIQUOR
Proprietors of "Blind Pig" Near Inde
pendence Arrested and Fined
Heavily.
Robert E. Gibbons, of Portland, and
Ed Kebbert, formerly of Black Rook,
were brought before Justice of the
Peace B. Wilson in Independence yes
terday afternoon, charged with the
illegal sale of liquor in a ,dry county
and a fine of $50 was Imposed upon
each. . ' "
The arrest was made Saturday night
by Sheriff J. M. Grant and his deputy,
Horatio Morrison. Mr. Morrison bad
for some time been confident that the
sale of liquors was being carried on
in the hopyards about Independence,
but so shrewd and cautious were the
dealers, that he was unable to secure
any proof sufficient to warrant the
arrest of the suspected parties.
Sheriff Grant was in Independence,
Saturday, and knowing that the liquor
dealers would be on their guard while
be was there, bad the report given out"
that he bad returned to Dallas late .in
the evening.
When be was reasonably sure that
all was quiet, he sent two men to the
tent in the Horst hopyard, where it
was claimed the liquor was being sold
with instructions to buy a bottle of
whiskey. Taking Mr. Morrison along
with blm he witnessed the tranaction
and stepping out from bis place of
concealment immediately took Keb
bert, who bad sold the liquor, into cus
tody. Gibbons was not at the tent at
the time and Mr. Morrison hurried up
to the dance hall and effected his
arrest there.
Finding that he was effectually
caught. Gibbons withheld nothing but
gave all the information on the subject
that he could, implicating several
parties hitherto unsuspected, in the
illicit traffic in the hopyards and a
number of arrests are expected to fol
low in a short time.
