this form of advertising madness has
been alow, but fortunately sure.
Month by month the writer baa
watched - the crimson outrages dis
appear under the merciful, obliterating
brush, and as each of these blots upon
the beauty of our city was removed.
verily there was more rejoicing in bis
heart over the one dead wall that was
repainted, than over the ninety and
nine that needed no repainting.
YAMHILL'S BOAST.
Among the many echoes of the
Salem Cherry Fair which have been
tossed backward and forward by
the press of Oregon during the past
ten days, one of the most unaccount
able and most continually recurrent
comes from Yamhill county in the
form of an arrogant claim that she.
by virtue of having carried away the
Grand Prize for the best collective
county exhibit, has thereby become
the hub of the cherry universe, or, to
put It more exactly in her own words
the "cherry center of the world." On
the surface, ber claim appears good ;
but let us inqutie more closely Into
the facts whereon it la based
In preparation for the Cherry Fair,
Yamhill county concentrated herener
gies more than did any of the other
counties represented, in an effort to
produce a perfect county exhibit, and
thanks to the unremitting zeal of
Mr. Lownsdale and a score of his
followers, she succeeded in attaining
as near perfection as would seem pos
sible to finite human power. Every
cherry In that marvellous collection
was selected with an eye to its Indivi
dual excellency, and the whole dis
play, consisting of the very cream of
Yamhill's product, was carefully
packed by the most artistic and skill
ful packers In the state. But Marion
county did not compete for the Grand
Prize, and the other counties prac
tically ignored it while bending all
their energies toward preparing
individual exhibits. Yamhill there
fore, practically without competitors,
carried off the Orand Trophy, and
Immediately herald! herself to the
astonished world as its cherry center.
And really her claim seems well
founded, does It not? But let us read
a little farther Into the history of the
prize awards on that momorable occa
sion. The total number of award Is
listed at 66, and of these Polk county
holds 26. The total number of cups
awarded was 21. Of tliete Polk county
took It, Marlon county 6, Lane county
1, and laoinill county 1. And yet of
all the counties to wjiom cups were
awarded, Yamhill, with a record of
only one against Marion's six and
Polk's 14, Is thin far the only county
that has had the temerity to style Itself
the "cherry centor of the world."
Ho when it has been really simmered
down to its essence, the U'Htlou
resolves itself luto this: In Individual
exhibits Yamhill was practically out
of the race, being equalled by Lane
county and far out distanced by both
Polk and Marlon counties. All of her
energies wore consumed in her
supreme effort to carry off a single
prize. In this she succeeded, and for
that suooess praise is due her, hut not
In so gre.it a moasure a sho demands.
Praise she deserves, and praise has
been freely and unstlutingly accorded
hei for her enthusiastic work In pre
paring her one crowning exhibit.
Praise for ber careful and shrewd
election from the very best that she
had produced.
The sidings at the 8. P. depot were
crowded today with more tbao 60 box
cars and "flats;" some loaded with
the product of our city's big sawmills,
ready for shipment to the eastern
markets; others filled with produce
from the farming country in this
vicinity ; others waiting to be relieved
of their burden of marchaudise
brought into the city from the manu
facturing cities of other states; and
still others lying ready for their loads
of the goods and produce of Dallas
and vicinity. The scene was one of
pleasing bustleand activity a certain
criterion to the prosperity of the com
munity In which we live.
