ACTIVE PROSPECTING FOR OIL
New
Weill Will Be Sunk in
Places Throughout Polk
County.
Many
' THE BREATHING SPACE.
Although the annual exodus to
mountain and coast resorts, has, dur
Jog the past two weeks, had a visible
effect on the general actielty of the
city, the lapse is in reality only appar
ent and only temporary, a pause, so to
speak, white the city and tbe country
around draws a deep breath, prepara
tory toeotarlog Into the feverish activ
ities attendant upon the Fall harvest
season. The recuperation of the in
dustries of Dallas since the panic
months In 1907 has been more rapid
and more stable than in almost any of
the other cities of tbe Willamette Val
ley, and tbe coming of another Fall,
even though It is tbe Fall of a presiden
tlal year, proverbially reputed to be the
dullest season imaginable, finds her
standing in an even (Inner and more
advanced position than she occupied
before the sudden, brief depression.
More freight cars are loaded daily
with the output of our two big saw
mills than were in use a year ago,
there Is more to do and more men to
do iv wages are good, and 'he prices
of produce are in excelled condition ;
indications of bumper crops in every
department of agriculture are evident,
and the whole country seems to throb
with the surging vitality of redoubled
prosperity. It la only Just, then, that
our olty and the country that lies
about It should for a brief space pause
and take rest from the enormous exer
tions of tbe past Industrial year, before
entering into the beginning of another,
which from all Indications, seems
destined to be a year of even greater
achievement than the one just closed.
Polk county's next goal the major
ity of awards for agricultural pro
ducts at tbe State Fair next Fall.
It will now be In order for John D.
to bestow a liberal portion of that
twenty-nine million which has, so
fortunately for him, boon plucked as
a brand from tbe burning, upon some
of those colleges and charitablo insti
tutions which muat have missed him
greatly Indeed during tbe past year.
COIRT HOUSE NOTES
Items of Interest From the Records
in the County Offices
Briefly Told.
C. N. Sherman, an oil expert, re
cently from Robinson, Illinois, Is leas
ing property in the vicinity of Inde
pendence and Monmouth for tbe pur
pose of prospecting extensively for oil,
He bas secured leases on about 4,000
acres already, and holds options of
several thousand more on which no
definite contract has been completed.
When these additional tracts have
been secured, he Intends to begin
drilling a number of places at once.
Mr. Sherman professes the utmost
confidence in the outcome of bis enter
prise, and claiming to be backed by
large capital, hopes to be able to rust
tbe work and achieve definite and con
vincing results to uphold bis predic
tions within a few months.
This new enterprise is tbe third of
its kind to be started in this locality
within the present year. The others I
are the W. u. Brown wen in norm
Dallas, and the Whiteaker project on
the farm about half way between
Dallas and Monmouth. Both of these
two have thus far scored no definite
success, although at both places tbe
workmen have struck encouraging
indications of oil in payingquantitles.
The Increasing activity in this line of
work throughout the valley portion of
Polk county, must soon achieve re
sults, and it is probable that within
tbe next six months the people of this
locality wiii know to a certainty
whether or not there is oil in Polk
county, and if there is, whether or not
it is of a good commercial quality,
nd can be secured in paying
quantities.
