reached here today that August Helm
ing, a prominent business man of
Marsbfield, was shot aod killed near
Corblo, Curry county, while hunting.
While stalking a doer one of the party
mistook Helming for the deer and
fired. Helming was killed instantly.
Tbe foregoing paragraph in yester
day's Oregoolan under the heading
"Mistaken For a Deer," marks the
beginning of the pitiful tragedy of
errors without which
to ietakr toilets, but the compar
,aliTe3y small stream of water issuing
'from tbe outlet of the sewer does not
) account for it all. Tbe loss is in
i large measure due to faulty and leak
i ing faucets, and still more to the
larirb and unnecessary use of water
in irrigation. It has been estimated
that the lawns and gardens of the city
on which water is being used con
tinually, could be maintained in just
as good condition as they are now in
with about half of the irrigation they
are receiving.
Concerning the useless waste of
water In irrigation, the superintendent
of the water company has remarked
that because the company allows

Ing season to pass. Every year repeats
the grim story with but little variation
save In the list of tbe victims'
names, and yet such an accident
should beeaslly avoidable. In almost
every case where a man has been shot
la this way, It has doveloped later
that the slayer fired blindly, and im
pulslvcly, not seeing his victim clearly
and rashly jumping at the conclusion
that the object that appeared India
tlnctly moving among tbe underbrus
was indeed a deer. Experienced hunts
men seldom make this fatal error.
Long training has taught them
caution. It Is usually tbe novice who
learns by bitter experience tbe lesso
of tbe too frequent results of a hasty
aod carelessly fired shot. When such
as these at last adopt tbe rule never to
fire until they have ascertained to
certainty what they are shooting at,
even though In so doing they may
run the risk of allowing their quarry
to escape, the familiar heading "Mis
taken For a Doer" will disappear
entirely from the columns of the news
papers.

is no reason why everybody should
