"JACK'l MCDONALD DEAD
Succumbs to Erysipelas In Portland,
Wednesday Funeral at Beaver
ton Today.
A. message was received from Port
land, Wednesday, announcing the
death of J. D. McDonald, the well-
known timber cruiser, and requesting
the Woodmen of Dallas, in which
lodge the deceased was for many years
a member, to come to Portland and
take charge of the remains. Mr. Mc
Donald's death, was comparatively
sadden and was due to a severe attack
of erysipelas.
The deceased was about 40 years of
age and was a resident of Dallas until
about four months ago, when he moved
with his family to Beaverton. He is
survived by a wife and three children.
Mr. McDonald was a native of Wis
consin coming to Oregon about twelve
years ago, and making his home in
Dallas. Perfectly familiar with the
mountains, he was one of the most
skillful timber cruisers in the state,
and it is doubtful if there is a man
living who is more intimately
acquainted with every foot of the tim
ber land in the Siletz Basin, than he.
He was a man of many sterling
qualities, actuated always by the most
kindly Impulses, and the death of
"Jack" McDonald will be sincerely
regretted by his many friends.
He will be buried at Beaverton to
day under the auspices of the Wood
men of that city, to which lodge he
transferred his membership from
Dallas.

A Card From the Cherry Fair.
W. B. Palmer, who Is attending the
Salem Cherry Fair writes that the
location of the exhibits at the opening
of the Fair yesterday was a scene of
great activity and that representatives
from air parts of Polk and Marlon
counties especially, were pres
ent, while people from all . or
the other fruit raising counties of
Oregon, were also in attendance".
Better packing and more care in
arranging, resulting from past years'
experience, he says, makes the exhibit
far superior than that of the previous
year. Thetentsof the National Guard,
who areTalso in Salem this week, are
pitched in a model camp on the fine
rifle range lying In Polk county just
west of the big steel bridge. About
ISO riflemen are present and the target
practice for the state militia will begin
today.
The party who picked up the Water
Company's valve wrench at Hills
corner, North Jefferson street, please

STOCKING UP
THE LARDER
WISE TALKS BY U. S. LOUQHARYS'
OFFICE BOY
I was glad that Pres. Roosevelt said
we hud the finest navy in the world,
because every one knows hp must
have referred to the quality' of our
battleships and cruisers and the men
behind the guns. I believe the boss
must know something aboutships, be
cause yesterday when everybody was
busy. In comes a fellow with an
awfully line-looking girl. It might
have been bis sister, but he certainly
did not treat her that way. Anyhow,
they wanted to buy a stock of gro
ceries. I thought it was a shame to
see them waiting around for some one
to get through, so I butted in and
showed them some of the goods that
caught my eye. I was dishing out
some gush that did not seem toet
well on the lady's constitution and
they were about to give me the high
sign, when the boss came up. I was
awfully glad he did, because he sold
'em a big bill of goods and they paid
the cash for it. After a while the boss
came up to me and said, "Willie, aft
is the place for you ; don't mingle with
the cabin passengers again." It made
me sort o' seasick all light.
