A WORD OF GREETING.
The Dew management of the Obser
ver, which formally addresses its sub
scribers and patrons for the flrst time
through the editorial columns of this
issue, believes that the past work of
the paper has met with their hearty
approval, and desires nothing better
than that It may continue to merit and
to receive the appreciation which has
been justly accorded it in the past, We
will endeavor, therefore, to maintuin
those vital policies that have deter
mined the character of the paper here
tofore, so that the change from the
old management to the now may lie
practically Imperceptible.
In our news service we will endeavor
to be prompt, thorough and accurate,
giving our readers all of tho import
ant news of Polk county while it Is
news, and making our reiorts brief,
comprehensive and reliable. The cor
respondence columns, which have
proven to be one of the most attractive
features of the Friday issue, bring
ing the people of widely separated dis
tricts In close personal touch with
each other, will be maintained as in
the past, giving the live and typical
news of every precinct in I'olk county.
In Its political views the Observer
will remain Republican, and will
adhere strictly to the same consistent
policies that have characterized it In
tho past. It shall stand openly and
frankly, as It has always stood, for all J
that It truly believes to be for tb

of Polk county ; It shall be, as It has
always been, frankly and unrelun
Ingly opposed to those measures or
Institutions that It believes to be
destructive or Injurious to the pros

In closing we desire to extend ou
hearty thanks to our friends an

Hops Rise to Ten Cents.
The market for 19d8 hops is now
(Irmly on a 10-cent basis. As was
stated in The Sunday Oregoninn,
rumors were current the latter part of
last week of 10 cents being offered on
contracts, and the rumors have since
been verified. It was learned yester
day that John Carmlchael, of Salem,
the representative-of Wlgnn, Richard
son & Co., of London, had contracted
for several lots at that price, the aggre
gate amount secured being, it was
said, about 7u,000pounds. Among the
growers reported to have made con
tracts with Carrnichael were George
Marhitt, of Jefferson ; J. O. Sewell, of
Hillsboro, and Jocobson, of liuena
Vlstn. It is also known that 10-cent
offers have been made to Krebs Bros,
and to George Rose, or Salem, but
these offers were not accepted. Ore
