ment at the hands of his wife, A. Bit
ner, an aged resident of North Dallas,
attempted suicide Tuesday by taking
laudnum, but was discovered and pre
vented by his neighbors.

The residence of Mrs. Henry Butler,
in Monmouth, was destroyed by. fire
Tuesday afternoon, scarcely anv of
its contents being saved. It was In
sured for $2,500, and it is thought that
this sum will cover a large portion of
the loss.
Several of the vouncr women who
are attendlnsr the Summer Normal
bad rooms in the house, and nearly
all of their' books and clothlnsr were
destroyed. Miss Nola Coad and Miss
Allle Fuller, of this city, were among
tne roomers, but were fortunately able
to reach the house within a few
minutes after the fire was discovered,
and succeeded in saving nearly all of
their belonKinars with the exception of
their school books. -
It is not known definitely how the
fire was caused, but it is supposed to
have been started from a defective
electric wire. Mrs. Butler was pros
trated from the shock, and has been
quite ill since that time. Her daughter,
Mrs. C. V. Teats, of this citv. is in
Monmouth at her bedside . .

Messrs. Kersluke & White have
closed the Colosseum skating rink for
the summer months after a most suc
cessful season. They will reopen it
for the winter about the first of
October.
H. L. Fenton, of the banquet com
mittee for the Pioneer Reunion,
desires to correct the rumor that has
been circulated, to the effect that the
pioneers were charged a fee of $1 each
for the banquet This banquet was
freely given as a part of Dallas' enter
tainment to the pioneers of the County.
The only fees paid by any of them
were the regular annual dues, amount
ing to 25 cents, for the payment of the
current expenses of the association.
Hon. B. F. Jones, joint representa
tive from Folk and' Lincoln counties,
will be a candidate for speaker of the
next House and ought to be in a strong
position for the honor. He has been
elected from his district three times
and has been a hard, conscientious
worker in the sessions of 1903 and 1907.
It was he who carried through the bill
last session for the opening of the
Willamette locks at Oregon City and
he has several good measures to his
credit He Is a ready -debater, a gen
ial, warm hearted fellow and a good
fighter for what he thinks right Har

DEATH IS MOURNED BY MANY
Clay R. Crider Universally Admired
and Respected Among Citizens
of San Jose.
The San Jose Mercury of June 24,
pays the following high tribute to
Clay R. Crider who died in that city
Tuesday, June 23, after a severe attack
of appendicitis.
"The death of Clay R. Crider early
Tuesday morning is mourned by a
great number of the younger people of
San Jose and by not a few of the older.
Since coming to this city six years ago
he had been winning friends and
admirers. In High school he was one
of the most popular students. In
Stanford he was even better liked and
respected, and during the past year,
while be was associated with the busi
ness men of San Jose, he came to be
admired as much for his business
ability and enterprise as for bis friend
liness and character. Mr. Crider was
a member of the Christian Church and
of the Elks lodge."

Change From Old System to New
. Takes Place Very Quietly.
The prohibition law which was
passed in Polk county at tbe recent
election went Into -effect at 12 o'clock
Tuesday night, and contrary to the
expectation of many, the transition
from the old to the new order of things
was extremely quiet
Not a single case of drunkeness.or
disorderly conduct was reported. The
people of the city treated the whole
matter as a joke, and much harmless
pleasantry was Indulged in. A lively
fusilade of fire' crackers near mid
night heralded the passing pf the old
regime and the beginning of the now.
Nearly all of the men who have been
engaged in the saloon business in
Dallas have already made prepar
ations for the future. Bilyeu & Sparks
have purchased an interest in a saloon
at Newport. Mr. Sparks has already
gone to that city and will be followed
in a few days by his partner. D. A.
Madison has purchased a saloon In
Salem and will make his home in that
city. J. C". Shultz has decided to retire
from business entirely. Atchison &
McHardy will remodel their building
and convert it into a pool room and
billiard hall.
