A FINAL WORD.
Before the next Issue of the Observer,
the state and county political cam
palgo will have drawn to a close and
tbe people will have chosen their
officers for the respective official terms,
The contest In Folk county has been
remarkably clean and free from per
sonailtles, and Rives promise or so
continuing to the end, leaving the
best of feeling among friends and
neighbors and nothing to regret
among tbe candidates. The Republican
ticket, both state and county, Is com
posea oi gooi men, and there la no
. reason why It should not receive the
united support of the Republican
voters. While this paper believes in
the principles of the Republican party
and naturally desires the success of
the Bepublican candidates, It has no
word of disparagement of any candi
date on the opposing tlckota. Tbey
re all worthy citizens, so far as we
know, but they are not In accord with
the principles and purposes of tbe
Bepublican party, and for this reason
have no claim to Republican support.
It Is true that county and precinct
oflloers have little to do with the shap
ing of party principles, but it Is also
true that tbe defeat of one of Its candi
dates by a Democrat weakens. the
Republican party Just to that eitent j
Tbe Observer does not believe that
any voter should be ao abject slave to

Republican, Mr. Chamberlain a Dem

professions of non-partisanship, are
lined up for Mr. Chamberlain to

tbe Republicans to do the forsakin
It Is their only hope of success, but it
will not win. The Republicans are
not deceived. They will support the
Bepublican candidate. Mr. Cake will
be elected, and tbe message that will
be flashed over tbe wires next Monday
night will carry tbe clad tidings to
tbe Republicans of the Nation that
Oregon is still a Republican state and
standing by the Republican adminis

LETTER TO VOTERS.
DALLAS, Or., Mav 27 It is a mis
taken claim that Folk county was out
of debt when the present Court went
nto office. On April 1, l'JOS. the time
whleh the former court made its
lust levy, the amount of outstanding
warrants which constituted the In
debtedness of the county was :I3,619 20,
and this amount was paid off by tbe
present administration the llrst two
years of Its term.
In addition to this, the present
administration has furnished new
metul furniture for the Clerk's and
Recorder's offices ; finished the court-
urn ; caused 10 oe constructed one
steel bridge, (the first ever built in the
county.) and let the contract for three
more. It has done more good road
work In the last year, 1907. than In
four years before, and has more work
laid out for this year than last year,
The present court raised the road levy

In this, our last issue before the
election, we have nothing farther to
say on the local option question tha
was said In Tuesday s paper.
All that was said is the result of tbe
writer's own personal observation, and
authority is given for every assertion
made. The statements cannot be
disproved, for the very good reason
that they are true. The article was
not written to make either friends or
enemies, but It Is gratifying to us
that some of the best people in the
community, leading church members
and otherwise good citizens, have in
dorsed what was said as fair and sin
cere. Ine opinion or a few persons
who have permitted tbeir zeal to get
the better of their discretion and led
them to say things of which they may
someday be sorry, are nothing to us.
It is an important question, and one
that should be discussed calmly and
without prejudice as between nelgb
bora and friends. The Observer has
no ill will against those who disagree
with it, but is willing to leave the mat
tor with the fair-minded men and
women of Polk county to decide. The
editorial was written as an appeal to
tbe people who are fair and free from
prejudice, and by their decision It will
cheerfully abide.
Tbe Observer, following its estab
lished policy of running no liquor
advertising In its columns, has
refused all matter offered by the
liquor dealers in tbe present cam
paign. It has likewise declined to
sell any space to the advocates of
local option. It has also declined all
communications offered by either
side. , Everything said on the local
option question has been printed In
tne editorial columns and represents
the editor s personal opinions.
There are many reasons why all of
the Oregon elections should not be
hold in November, the chief of which
is that the politics of the state Is cleaner
under the present system. It Is not
possible now for some shyster poli
tician to trade a vote for President in
order to gain a vote for Constable.

LIFE WORK IN SCHOOLS.
In the year. 1899. the Oregonlan

Electricity for Lighting
Is only expensive to people who are
wasteful and careless. To you, who
are naturally careful, it does not
come high.
It Is economical because It can be quickly turned off wnen not needed.
With gas or kerosene there Is the temptation to let light burn when
not needed to save bother of lighting and adjusting. In some homes
the electric light bills amount to only one or two dollars per month.
You can probably get some kind of artificial light for less money
than electric light, but does it save you an vthlng when It limits op
portunities for work and recreation rulna your eyesight smokes
your walls mars decorations and increases household work. You
could probably save a dollar tomorrow by going without .your meals
put it would n t be economy. It Is not so much what you save, but
how you save that counts. .
