principle before th primaries, when It
was whole lot less popular than It is

was as mum as an oystor. Instead of
going openly before the people as a
candidate and lifting bis voice in favor
of the election of Senators by a popu
lar, voto, ha sat In blsonice and waited
to see bow many Statement No. 1 can
didates for the Legislature would be
nominated at the primary. Knowing
that sufficient number of voters of
dis party woum write tils name on
tbelr ballots to give blm the nomlna
lion, be held himself In a position
where be oould accept or decline that
nomination after he had seen how
Statement No. 1 had fared In the pri
maries. Finding that It was popular
and that Its advocates would probably
lack only ono or two votes of a major
ity in the next Legislature, he accepted
the nomination and Jumped Into the
raoe, announcing hlmwlf as the origi
nal Statement No, 1 advocate. Had
the Slatoment been defeated in the
primaries and had only a bare hand
ful of Its candidate been nominated.
Politician Oeorge would have refused
. the nomination and continued to warm
too Oovernor's chair, leaving State
ment No 1. to take care or itself.
(lovernor Chamberlain's whole

been that of a political demagogue

Observer mistakes not the temper or
the people of Oregon, they will not
permit themselves to be fooled by the
wiles of this professional office-seeker,
but will rally to the suppoit or II. M

POLK'S FIE RIFLE RANGE
Oregon National Guardsmen Want
Grounds Improved and Made
Permanent.
Since the establishment of the state
military rifle range across the river
in Polk county there has been some
agitation in national guard circles as
to whether it shoafcl be kept at Salem
permanently.
The state has gone to the expense of
Journal. The efforts of the Journal j
to find some reasonable objection to I
the Republican candidate for Senator
are amusing. It cannot question Mr.
Cake's Republicanism, and it does not
dare to boast of Chamberlain's
Democracy. All itcan do, In itsefforts
to pull the wool over the eyes of the
voters. Is to tout Chamberlain as a
Roosevelt Republican and pretend
that Cake has abandoned Statement
No. I. The truth Is that Chamberlain i
is a Bryan Democrat, and that Cake!
is standing exactly where be has .'leasing a strip of land, having pits
always stood in reference to the elec- j made and installing therein eight tar
tion of Senators by a direct vote of the 1 got racks. The pits were graded out In
people. The Republican voters fully-clay and the rains have in several
understand the situation, and will not 'places done considerable damage to
permit themselves to be blinded by the the grading by washing down the
Journal's sophistry. The nomination embankments ami walls, making it
of Mr. Cake smoked that paper out of , cot altogether safe lor target tenders.
Its Democratic hole, and it is no longer j Tne location of the range is excellent
aole to pose as an Independent aR(j provides an almost perfectly level
journal. Its frantic efforts to find stretch of 1W yards with the side of
some argument against Mr. Cake athe iarge bill to shoot into, thus mak
stand on Statement No. 1 have proved j jDg tuat part absolutely safe to those
to the voters that it is not so much j not directlv interested in the target
interested in the success of that prin
ciple as in the election of George
Chamberlain, Democrat
practice work. Salem .Statesman.
The Fails City Newaehanged owners
this week, C. L. Starr selling the plant
and good will of the business to B. S.
Billings, a recent arrival from Ohio.
The News is a live and enterprising
paperand is building up a thriving
business in Polk County's prosperous
lumber town. The paper was greatly
improved under Mr. Starr's manage
ment, and his only reason for selling
is that bis duties as Secretary of the
State Normal Regents require his
whole time and attention. His sue
oessor Is a wide-awake business man,
and the Observer bespeaks for him the
hearty support and encouragement of
the good people of Falls City.
Please let Mr. Cake run on his own
record, not on the president's. Albany
Democrat. But isn't Chamberlain,
claiming to be abetter Roosevelt man
than Cake or anybody else in Oregon,
and is be not trying to boost himself
into the senate through his declara
tions for Roosevelt policies, while at the
same time be is legging for Bryan as
a presidential candidate? When it
comes to political acrobats Chamber
lain is certainly the whole show.

Electricity for Lighting
Is only expensive to people who are
wasteful and careless. To you. who
are naturally careful, it does not
come high.
It is economical because It can be quickly turned off wnen not needed.
With gas or kerosene there Is the temptation to let light twirn when
not needed to save bother of lighting and adjusting. In some homes
tne electric light bills amount to only one or two dollars per month,
lou can probably get some kind of artificial light for less money
tnan electric light, but does it save you anvthing when It limits op
portunities for work and recreation ruins your eyesight smokes
your walls mars decoration and increases household work. You
could prolmblv save a dollar tomorrow by going without your meals
out It wouldn t be economy. It is not so much what you save, but
how vou save that counts.
