Tkt way to build up Dallas is to pat-
ronitt Dallas people.
AN IMPORTANT STEP.
Counolltneo Coad andStafrln return
from EugeDeenthuaiastically Id favor
of bitbulltic pavement in preference to
macadam streets. This Is not to be
wondered at It would be strange to
bear any other decision from any
practical business man wbo baa com
pared the two systems of improve
ment. Maoadam streets wilt amply
meet every need of the residence
district in a town the size of Dallas,
but the crushed rock is not suitable
for the business thoroughfares, for the
reason that it would not long withstand
the heavy traffic and in a few years
would be in need of constant repairing.
Then, aside from this most important
advantage, the smooth pavement has
In its favor the clean lines and beauty
of the city.
The Observer believes that were the
property-owners to decide in favor cf
crushed rock now, tbey would regret
the decision Inside of two years and
be demanding the better pavement
It is true the bitbulitic pavement is
much mors expensive than macadam,
but in the end the taxpayers will find
it much the cheaper. Like anything
else that Is good, it costs money, but it
is well worth its cost
The coudoII has acted wisely in
referring this Important Improvement
to the property-owners before proceed
ing with the movement already under
way for rock streets, and evory busi
ness man and citizen Interested in
keeping Dallas In the very front rank
of progressive Oregon towriB (and Unit
Includes every resident of the city)
should attend the mass mooting Fri
day evening. There Is no doubt as to
what the loyal and progressive
citizens of Dallas will do at this
meeting. They will Instruct tholr offi
cers to keep right on with the good
work of building a greater and better
city. It Is this spirit of standing
boulder to shoulder in the march of
progress that has placed Dallas In the
proud position she occupies today,
ami in this Instance, as In the past,
there will be no backward step.

"NOT VERY IMPORTANT.
The Pendleton Trlbuue takes this
view of the senatorial situation :
The Portland Journal, under the
bore heading, asserts that It Is nut a
matter of any particular moment as to
what party a senator of the United
States belongs, "partisanship does not
count for or against a senator now as
much as It did a few years ago,"
"Sure not, Mike I When running for
governor our non-partisan George
fooled part of the republicans by
declaring that there is no politics in
the governor's office merely an exec
utive function Is only required to
enforce the laws, that is all.
"And now that he Is running for
senator, he declares in the most non
partisan matter In the world that there
Is 00 politics In the position ho Is after
'not like there used to be!'
The democrats are all suposed to
vote for Chamberlain to man In
order to show their independence of
'party' (I), while the republicans are
expected to show their non-partisan
ahlp by voting for hi in toot
"Ana the republican who will be
fooled by this transparent clap trap
should be takon out and treated for
the simples."
A. M. White and A. T. White, of the
firm of Moffat & White, the financial
backers of the Oregon Electric Com

minute and extensive examination
of all tbe company' properties and
lines. Their presence Is considered by
all an additional assurance that the
Oregon Electrlo Company will rush
all the projects they have planned, by
which they hope to embrace the whole
of the Willamette Valley In one enor

Electricity for Lighting
Is only expensive to people who are
wasteful and careless. To you, who
are naturally careful, it does not
come high.
It is economical because it can be quickly turned off wnen not needed
With gas or kerosene there is the temptation to let light burn when
not needed to stive bother of lighting and adjusting. In some homes
the electric light bills amount to only one or two dollars per month
You can probably get some kind of artificial light for less money
than electric light, but does it save you anything when it limits op
portunities for work and recreation ruins your eyesight smokes
your walls mars decorations and increases household work You
could probably save a dollar tomorrow by going without your 'meals
but it wouldn t be economy. It is not so much what you save but
how you save that counts.
