It Is hoped that the city ooaocil will
mske at least a small appropriation
to assist the business men Id paying
for the serrlces of a Digbt watchman.
It is certainly worth something to the
people to bare a competent officer look
ing after the peace and order of the
city daring those boars when tbe day
offloer is not on duty. Kightwatch
man Odom, while Id the employ of the
business men, gave bis services to the
eity In making arrests and preserving
the peace, and rendered much valu
able asslstaoce In keeping Dallas an
orderly and quiet town, and yet the
council steadily refused to contribute
a penny toward bis salary, leaving
the whole harden of expense to fall on
a few business men. Tbe citizens who
were paying Mr. Odom 's salary deeply
felt tbe loj ustl ce of the council 's course,
and it is hardly probable that the
councilman, themselves, would bare
said that It was right, especially In
lew of tbe fact tbat not another town
io Oregon forces a few merchants and
business men to pay tbe entire salary
of a night offloer. It is hoped tbat tbe
bold-over oouncllmen and tbe new
officers to be sworn In next Monday
Dlght will take a broader view of tbe
matter and contribute at least a small
portion of tbe nigbt watchman's sal
ary. It would be better still if tbe city
would put a regular policeman on
duty at nigbt and leave tbe day work
to be done by a deputy at a nominal
salary. Dallas is one of tbe mit
orderly towns on tbe PaclflcCoast and
has little need of a peace officer, day
or night, and practically all that Is
required Is a competent man to enforce
tbe law and guard tbe hemes and
business bouses In tbe quiet bours
when all the good people are wrapped
io slumber.
Governor Cbamberlaio's campaign
for United States Senator will be so
flattened out before the first of June
that he will realize that be has never
been In the fight. He Is already find
intr out mat me "non-partisan" game
will no longer work, and tbat the
nomination ot Mr. Cake has placed
him la an awkward and embarrassing
position from wblob be will be unable
to extricate blmseir. His campaign
thunder Is gone. The Governor Is a
wily politician, but the recent (urn of
affairs has placed him In a position
where be can no longer fool the people,
and hat left blm without a single peg
on wbloh to bang his Senatorial ambi
tion. Republican Oregon will not elect
a Democrat to an offioe next Id
Importance to that or President ot the
United States.
Tbe last county has been heard from
in the senatorial race, and the com
plete returns give Cake a majority of
ISM over Fulton. All over the state
tbe Republicans are lining up In sup
port of Mr. Cake's candidacy, and bis
lection by an overwhelming majority
Is assured.

county near tbe Benton line io 145,
about tbe same time the late J. C.
Avery settled oa what has since become

Btaata, Their homes were It miles

Passengers on tbe Tarn bill division
of the Southern Pacific railroad will
hereafter miss tbe smiling face aod
pleasant greeting of Joseph Crocker
tbe veteran conductor. After twenty
years of continuous service on this
division, Mr. Crocker has been trans
ferred to tbe West Side, exchanging
places with Conductor Webster, whose
advancing years makes it necessary
for him to take an easier run. Mr.
Crocker made bis last regular trip
from Dallas to Portland yesterday
afternoon.
Conductor Crocker came to Oregon
from California about twenty years
ago, aod entered the employ of tbe
Oregonian Railway Company, (Lim
ited, ) as a wod uctor on tbe Dall a. ro n.
Tbe road at that time was a narrow
gauge, aod a mixed freight and pas
senger train was operated between
Portland and Airlie, tri-weekly, com
ing op one day and going back the
next.
This tri weekly train, of which It
used to be said that it came up one
week and tried to go back tbe next,
was a standing Joke among the people
of Polk county and the traveling public
in general. Tbe equipment of tbe
road consisted of a few small loco
motives, known as "dickies," and one
or two vest-pocket-edition coaches,
together with flatcare and boxcars of
like proportion. The locomotives were
about the size of an ordinary harvest
ing engine, and were unable to pull
more than two or three loaded cars up
an ordinary grade. Owing to tbeir
light weight, these locomotives were
off tbe track about as much of tbe
time as they were on it, and tbe writer
well remembers tbat at one time when
an excursion train was returning from
a picnic at Ballston, all of the able-
bodied men and small boys on the
train, were loaded onto the engine to
keep it on tbe rails and to prevent it
from "rearing up" as the cars were
being pulled up Smitbfleld bill.
Tbe regular train, facetiously known
as tbe "Cannon Bail," used to leave
Airlie early In the morning and arrive
In Portland about 6 o'clock In tbe
evening, although the distance is less
than 80 miles. Dallas passengers ate
lunch at Wbitesoo, less than 20 miles
from home. The engine bad a habit
of jumping tbe track about every five
miles, but a little mishap like tbat did
not worry Conductor Crocker in the
least lie would borrow a few rails
troru a neighboring fence, and sum
montog toe train crew and the pas
sengers to bis assistance, would lift
the old tea-kettle back onto tbe rails
and be on his way again in less tban
an hour's time, as calmly as If nothing
had happened.
Conductor Crocker, when In a rem
iniscent mood, can tell many a good
story of those hnleyou days. Here Is
one of bis best: He tells tbat atone
time a young woman, whoso parents
resided In Dallas, was teaching school
at SmlthOeld. Every Friday after
noon, sho would board the train at
tbat station and come to Dallas to
spend tho Saturday holiday. One
Tuesday night there was to be an
entertainment in Dallas, and the
young woman, desiring to attend, was
waiting at the station when the train
pulled In. Just as the engineer was
whistling for down brakes, a passen
ger Inquired, "Conductor, what day
Is this?" Happening to see the school
teacher waiting at the station as usual,
Conductor Crocker absetit-tnlndodly
answered, "Friday." Overhearing
tbe answer, an aged traveling man,
who bad been dosing In bis scat, woke
up and remarked: "Well, I knew
this was a slow train, but I had no
Idea it was as bad as that We left
Portland on Tuesday morning, and
here it is Friday afternoon."
But those old days are gone, and
now ail Is changed. When tbe road
passed Into the bands of tbe Southern
Paclfle Company, the track was soon
changed to a standard gauge, and
modem locomotives and coaches took
tbe place of the antiquated equipment
Instead or a tri weekly mixed train,
the company has long operated a dally
passenger train between Dallas and
Portland, aod a few years ago a second
dally train was placed on tbe run.
Instead of being all day on tbe road.
tbe trip to tbe city Is now made In
three hours.
Through all or these changes and
years. Conductor Crocker bas been on
tbe run. and by bis agreeable manners
and uniform courtesy to passengers,
has endeared blm self to every man,
woman and child living along the
line. His transfer to the West Side
will be regretted by every patron of
tbe l'amhlll division, but all will be
pleased to learn that his place Is to be
filled by so pleasant and obliging an
official as the veteran Conductor Web
ster.
