greater hold on the farming commu

The Orpingtons are comparatively new
coiners, but have rapidly made theli
way to a first place In the utility class
Particularly may this be suld of th
buff variety.
The Kiigliidi group of fowls, among
which are the Orpingtons, may be said
to unbrace many different kinds, and
for the most part they have been val
ued for their egg laying and table
qualities. As wllh the American breeds,
the aim seems to have been a combi
nation of e'.'g laying and market types
with small frame und superior quality
of flesh. In this respect the English
and French breeds may be said to be
unexcelled. Both nations are also
skilled In crossing varieties, with the
aim f producing flesh with small
frames nml u fine quality of meat of
white color.
Buff Orpingtons are one of many va
rieties and probably the most popular
of the Orpington family. They are rap
idly replacing many wornout strains
and mongrels on our farms and have
taken n front place In the utility poul
try ranks as winter luyers and market
fowls. Thero Is great demand for eggs
and fowls of this breed. They have
IlKht colored legs mid white flesh.
Chickens are hardy and grow rapidly.
Eggs are of medium or larger size, ac

Specie of Alfilaria.
There are about eight species of al-
fJaria p-owing in the United States,
three being native to the Pacific coast
resrion. Tbe most valuable and the
one that has made such progress on
the ranges Is the red stemmed alfilaria
(Erodium cicutarium). This species is
a hairy, slightly viscid, erect or as
cending herbaceous winter annual from
six to eight Inches high. Its flowers
are lilac or purple, and the plant pos
sesses generally a pronounced musky
odor. During the winter It forms a
compact, many leaved rosette from ten
to twelve Inches In diameter, from
which the stems are thrown up during
the spring months.

ment of trees which are in a dormant
state, being much too strong for appli
cation to trees In foliage. Experiments
Indicate that the best results follow
applications In spring Just before the
irrowth of tbe tree begins.
For the Farm Dairy.
Work in breeding for milk produc
tion at the Canada experiment farms
seems to show that (a) superior dairy
cows may be found In all breeds; (b)
pure bred females are not essential to
success in dairy farming, but a pure
bred bull should always be used.
